INTRODUCTION

In a world where many of us find ourselves eating meals on the go or at our desks, there seem to be two dismal scenarios. A packed salad that ends up soggy, brown, and limp leafed (or worse, spilled all over your bag). Or an overpriced, mediocre purchased salad that leaves you thinking that you could have done it better (and cheaper) yourself.

Enter the humble jar 

Who would have thought that storing salads in a jar could make lunch on the go so much fresher, easier, and cheaper? Tossing a jar of salad in your bag will no longer be like playing a game of lunchtime roulette. Jars keep salad ingredients fresher for longer and make salads more portable, more convenient, and leak-proof. And they are built-in portion control. 

Far from the prawn cocktail of my youth, these salads range from the slight to the substantial. The big-jar recipes are packed with whole grains, proteins, and hearty vegetables to keep you out of the snack drawer until dinner. The small-jar recipes are full of flavor with a sprinkling of lighter grains—perfect for less-hungry days or as side dishes. 

All of the salad recipes are nutritionally sound, incorporating lots of fresh vegetables, heart-healthy fats, and whole grains so that eating salad feels like a meal rather than a starter course.

Equipment 

Very little equipment is needed to assemble salad in jars, but here are a few useful items that will speed up your prep time and make your salad-in-jars experience the best it can be. 

Wide-mouthed jars These will make assembling and eating much easier.
Salad spinner Use to get salad greens clean and dry.
Y peeler Use for shaving long ribbons of vegetables. 
Mandoline or handheld slicer Use for extra-thin slicing or julienning.
Long-handled rubber spatula Use for getting every last drop of dressing.

Prep times

Some of the recipes call for precooked grains; the cooking guide on page 10 will direct you. Leftover cooked grains can be frozen in zip-top bags, making it simple to pull out what you need, when you need it.



SOUTHEAST ASIAN
Makes: 1 pint – Time: 5 minutes

YOU NEED
1 to 2 tablespoons Thai Pick-Me-Up 
1 small carrot, peeled and julienned  
1 ounce enoki mushrooms
2 1⁄2 ounces chopped baby bok choy
3⁄4 ounce cashew nuts

Place the dressing in the bottom of a pint jar. Add the carrot, followed by the mushrooms, baby bok choy, and, finally, the cashews (separated by parchment if not eating that day). Seal the jar tightly.

This salad is full of vitamin A, which is essential for vision, the immune system, and reproduction.

Cool idea, poor execution

The salads are nice and simple, however they're really tiny servings and many books are now producing recipes where the ingredients pan over to other recipes easily. Each recipe is completely different from the next and requires you to go buy large bunches of veggies for small jars.

Ferguson, who has been successively a mechanical engineer, a technical museum curator, and a teacher of the history of technology, uses examples ranging from the development of the American axe to the collapse of the Hartford Coliseum and the performance of the Hubble space telescope to illustrate the ways in which visual thinking enriches engineering and the ways in which engineering that relies solely on technical sophistication can go wrong. He argues that a system of engineering education that ignores this heritage of nonverbal thinking will produce engineers who are dangerously ignorant of the many ways in which the real world differs from the mathematical models constructed in academic minds.

In Engineering and the Mind's Eye, Ferguson discusses the nature of engineering design and traces the development of visual and other nonverbal thinking, offering examples of how engineers and other technologists have used such strategies since the Renaissance. Accompanying these examples, and demonstrating the ways in which engineers have shared their knowledge, is a parallel text of illustrations showing how visual thinking has been expressed over the past five centuries. Ferguson concludes his provocative account by arguing that engineering education since 1945 has been skewed toward analytical techniques - which are easiest to teach and evaluate - and away from the art of engineering design as taught by experienced engineers.

Andrew Skurka adds to his original Ultimate Hiker's Guide with more in depth information concerning hiking. This is must for any novice or pro who wants the experience of a hiking legend that has hiked more than 33,000 land miles during a number of long trail hikes, off trail hikes, and shorter technical hikes. Over this distance Andrew has honed his skills to be able to engage almost any conditions know to man with calm resolve and know how. He attempts to teach methods about how to increase your equipment knowledge which ultimately enables you to lighten up your pack weight. And anyone who hikes knows that a pack that is lighter allows for greater ease of travel and enjoyment in the back country, or on the trail.

The book is very descriptive, informative, and entertaining.

This is a must have and great resource for hikers of any and every level.

Can't say enough good things about this book -- a must-own in my opinion!

Put simply, Skurka’s gear guide is the most efficacious written compilation of hiking and backpacking knowledge for outdoor enthusiasts (not just hikers!) of all levels and ages that I have come across. The focus is not just on the gear, but also on how and when to use it, in addition to expert tips and techniques from trip planning to campsite selection. I have learned a great deal from perusing the first edition and have referred back to it on countless occasions. I have recommended it to many friends and acquaintances, gifted several copies, and even included it in a raffle for BigCityMountaineers. And if you already own the first edition, the second one is still worth getting as it offers a comprehensive update that makes this guide the most up-to-date on the market (e.g. to Cuben fibre, or not to?). Sure, there are other good hiking books and plenty of free online advice (Chris Townsend's meatier "Backpacker's Handbook" and SectionHiker.com come to mind), but few sources are as concise, insightful, comprehensive, and well presented as this one. Best of all, you will save hundreds of dollars on future gear purchases by making more informed decisions--the book pays for itself many times over!

Comprehensive guide lists not just the gear possibilities but also first-aid considerations, esp. avoiding & treating blisters!

I am a newbie hiker after 55 years of sloth and indolence, the kind who automatically adds two stars to any trail difficulty rating, so I wasn't sure this book would have anything in it for me. On the other hand, when in doubt, shop, right?

But I'm so glad we have this book! It lists all kinds of things that I never would have thought about, like all the different types of shoes/boots there are and when each type might come in handy. Somehow I got it in my head that if I have hiking boots, that's what I should wear hiking, but Skurka makes it clear that each hike should be considered separately when it comes to apparel and gear, and socks and footwear are among the most important consideration.

The part of the book that impressed me the most was the discussion of blisters, prevention and treatment. Boy, I wish I'd had this book the week we hiked Utah's national parks! I scored huge blisters in Zion the first day and paid the price throughout the week in all the other parks... Despite being a very experienced and hard-core adventurer, Skorka is honest about some of the mistakes he and hiking companions have made.

There are places where Skorka does lose me a bit -- his experiences are so far beyond what I'll probably ever manage that I tune out a bit sometimes.

However, I think this is going to be as important a book to have when preparing for future trips as my maps and travel guides are, and also good to read through in the car on the way to the trailheads, with plenty of great "do and don't" reminders.

Travis gets a surprise while looking for packing boxes! A sexy cougar partner and a new agent to take hone to Yuma! The pace is fast you want a full novel but for all that it is a novella you don't feel like anything is missing, action, suspense romance with a bit of hot passion thrown in.

An excellent review of the topic based on research done by the author. It challenges conventional wisdom about religious education. I read this as part of a training program for hospital chaplains, but it is useful for anyone with working with children in the realms of religion, faith, spirituality. It is from a Christian perspective, but pertains to other faith traditions and those who describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious." Parents and other adults who desire insight into the children in their lives will also find this book stimulating.

Beautiful book, great quality paper, so much fun!

I have painted in all three Painterly Days books (they arrived a week earlier than expected)!! I love watercolor but am not a confident drawer so these books were perfect for me :)

After reading the first review from someone who hadn't even painted in the books yet, I felt the need to chime in as someone who has painted in them!!!

Yes the paper used is a thinner watercolor paper however it is of excellent quality for painting. AND it is most definitely watercolor paper!

Artwork in the book is printed on a smooth "hot press" watercolor paper equivalent to an 80 lb cardstock.

There are several questions I ask when choosing watercolor paper (remember I'm a painter so forgive my in depth explanation):
1. Is there a slow drying time so you can "work" with the color applied for a longer time before everything dries?
2. Does the paper allow the color to explode on the page when wet?
3. Does the color bleed through the other side or significantly wrinkle the paper when dry?
4. Does the paper start to break down or pill after being brushed a few times?

The watercolor paper used in these books satisfied and exceeded all of my expectations for a good watercolor paper (see photos attached).

Yes this is definitely a thinner watercolor paper weight but clearly a paper designed to be used with watercolor and produce a beautiful result.

Just to note re: the first commenter's wish to have the pages printed on a heavier cardstock......
CARDSTOCK DOES NOT WORK FOR WATERCOLOR (sorry for the all caps but this is an important point), no matter how thick it may be. Cardstock is not able to handle water without pilling, rippling and drying the color too quickly leaving harsh, unattractive edges.
***I would definitely recommend the first commenter paint in these books and then revisit their comment! ***

I've attached a photo of one of my paintings in the book...I could never have gotten this result on low quality watercolor paper or cardstock.

A watercolor coloring book is tricky. The pages have to be thick enough, lay flat, and not make a mess of the rest of the pages. As an artist I look for things like that because I know it'll lead me to have a better artistic experience. Kristy has taken care of all the quality aspects of the book so all I had to do was get out my paints and water. If you want to have fun without being frustrated with watercolors then this is the book for you. It really couldn't be easier.

A keeper!

It has been a while since I read this book, but I was impressed by the effort that the authors had put into exploring alternative chemistries and ways of harnessing energy in a cosmic environment. The chemistry seems sound and whilst it might not be the beginners book on astro-biology, it certainly does a good job of pushing on the boundaries of what could be possible in terms of alien life that obey physical law as we understand it. I would say this book is a must have on the shelf of anyone interested in astro-biology and also would suit the collection of biology nuts. This is a keeper!!

Terrific book, compact and easy to get through without sacrificing too much detail

My professors highly recommended this book, and I grudgingly bought it. I am really happy with it as it provides important context and explanation as well as interesting stories relating to the topic at hand while remaining compact and portable. For a textbook- it's fantastic. For lite evening reading... doable I guess.

This is a great book for anyone seriously studying microbes! The chapters are short and readable and it is a valuable reference to hold on to long after a class is over. This is one of the few textbooks I don't regret spending money on.

Not a complete source for medical students.

The organization of this textbook is horrible, and I have found numerous important facts missing from the chapters. Examples: Quelling reaction is never stated in the entire textbook (used to diagnose strept pneumonia), and there is no mention in the entire textbook of Bacitracin sensitivity, even though it is used to differentiate Group A from group B streptococcus. Sadly my school has chosen this book to be my only source of information, which is now greatly lacking. I would highly recommend supplementing your readings with First Aid of the Basic Sciences if you are a medical student. I wish I would have realized how terrible of a book this was earlier on.

About the Author
ALI A. RIZVI grew up in Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan before moving to Canada and the United States when he was 24. Rizvi has been writing extensively about secularism in the Muslim world for several years, working as a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and being published on major media outlets like CNN. Rizvi is also a medical communications professional and a trained physician and oncologic pathologist.

To look at this book and to check the subject matter one may think this is an overwhelming read. It is not. It is so well written and documented that it was hard to take a break.

Along with his personal story, this was also an excellent history lesson. Are there some ideas we are born into and more that we grow into as individuals, becoming more aware of the differences and similarities between cultures and religions?

Church and State have long been connected in our world’s history. And that subject is dealt with thoroughly here. The author explains how our personal identity is all too often wrapped in our cultural identity.

I had specific questions going into this book and every one of them was answered. I am extremely glad to have read it and to recommend it.
