A Definite Worthy Read!

When I opened this book that I won through “BoroughsPublishing Group” and their Christmas event, I was pretty excited for many reasons. Firstly, I had never heard of Nikki, secondly I had never read a book about two men in a relationship. This would be a great experience, so I truly looked forward to it all around.

The dedication grabbed it right from the start: “For those who believe “Love is Love” and that “Love is colorblind.”” When I read that, I knew Nikki would have a book that would be worthy of my time right here. I also knew that Nikki would be one of those Authors that I would be keeping around. She was a definite keeper.

Then I continued reading, and hit this part: “I’m tired of this same damn argument!” Instantly I relaxed. Okay, this is a true to life book. Everyone argues, we’re all the same. Why am I thinking this book is going to be any different?

Shortly thereafter that, we read: “I’m not ashamed of you, and I’m not ashamed to be gay!” How often do we hear of ‘gay’ people saying this, but not acting on it. Quite a lot, if I do say so myself. But this was intriguing because these men weren’t ashamed of one another, and they wanted to make it work. And as you read, you’re actually rooting for them. They’re sexy, romantic, and perfect for one another.

Here I am reading and hoping that Julian and Pierce will be succeed. They are everything you want for one another, and just like every relationship, they keep having their issues, and making mistakes. You want to help, and you just keep reading. The romance is so deep, the love is so real. And your feelings are right there with them.

I love the fact that once they realize they are meant for one another, Julian and Pierce aren’t afraid to come out and make their life and love known to the world. That is how love should be known, no matter who or what you are. Like Nikki said, “Love is Love.” If you don’t like who someone loves, deal with it. It Isn’t your business!

And from what I was told, as I learned from Nikki, this book, was written, and rewritten several times. I don’t know how it was at first, but it is total perfection right here, right now. I was totally in love with “Pure Adrenaline”. I just was right there, rooting them along, wanting everything to work out, and watching as I read. It is a five star book, strong and sound, sensitive, and represents the LGBT community in every sense of the way. If you haven't read it yet, you truly should.

Loved this short story! A perfect little gem. Julian and Pierce are an adorable couple with hot sexy times, a bit of angst, and a real-life problem. I love reading stories where the characters are already in a relationship--seeing love overcome negativity makes me happy. Pure Adrenaline will definitely leave you with a smile on your face. Great beginners book, wonderful advice

This book helped me setup my first marine aquarium. The advice on setup, run up and maintenance is well written and interjected with great wit every once in a while. It is packed with very useful information. The book is very close to a perfect marine starter manual. It's only flaws lack of some graphics (such as the disease section) and in organization. That is the only reason I did not give the book a five star rating. These minor flaws are easily overlooked and overshadowed by the wealth of the book. If you are a first time marine aquarianist (as am I) this is a well-written, excellent book to start with. If you have been in the hobby for a while, it is an excellent reference.

A nearly complete book

Moe covers most of the parts of setting up a first-time marine aquarium with aplomb and humor (his troubleshooting section includes "water pooling around tank" and "cookie floating in tank"). The only drawbacks to this book are a lack of illustrations and there is no real species profile to speak of. Since many, if not most, people start with an idea of what kind of fish they want to keep and work (backwards?) from there, a section would be helpful. But the information in the book will complement a species-focused book quite nicely.

About the Author
William F. Powell is an internationally recognized artist and one of America's foremost colorists. A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Powell studied at the Art Student's Career School in New York, Harrow Technical College in Harrow, England, and the Louvre Free School of Art in Paris, France. He has been professionally involved in fine art, commercial art, and technical illustrating for more than 35 years.

Powell has written and illustrated 13 instructional art books for Walter Foster Publishing, and he is the creator of the original Color Mixing Recipe Cards. His experience as an art instructor includes oil, watercolor, acrylic, colored pencil, and pastel--with subjects ranging from landscapes and seascapes to portraits and wildlife. Much of the artist's work has been reproduced as prints and collector's plates, and he has produced numerous contract paintings and illustrations for a variety of publishers. Additionally, Powell conducts painting workshops and produces instructional videos that employ unique methods of in-depth presentation and demonstration.

Powell holds awards for his technical art, which has been used for major projects, such as space program and environmental studies. Model making, background sets for films, animated cartoons, and animated films for computer mock-up programs have also been part of his work.

paperback version is better than Kindle edition

I bought the Kindle edition and I am so disappointed after seeing the paperback version. The paperback version has a lot of drawings and examples which are not in the kindle edition. The kindle edition is so stripped down that it is not worth the price. Get the paperback version instead.

If you wan't to learn how to draw trees get this book.

This is a pretty good guide for learning to draw trees. It is not very thick.
It is very big though, kind of unruly, and it is extremely thorough.
Every page is packed with all of the essential information.
It starts out with all of the essential tools like most drawing books
and ends with a series of examples on how to draw specific species
of trees.
If you wan't to learn how to draw trees get this book .

Just what I was looking for! Seems like it can be easily used by beginners, and is very sketch-oriented--no watercolors, which was a plus in my case. It is very short, leaving me to wish there was a bit more tips and examples, but for what it had it was great!

An absolutely delightful book for the dedicated acupuncturist who wishes to escape the rigid boundaries of TCM

I'm going to love anything that is written about real acupuncture practice, and 5 elements is part of that study. When Mao Tse Tung turned China into a communist country one of the things he did was to round up all of the most famous doctors in China and demand that they convert Chinese medicine into something that could compete with Western medicine. In the process, he demanded that they take out anything mystical, magical, superstition, shamanistic concepts from which authentic ancient Chinese medicine had developed. It's like removing the sap from a tree and spraying it with a formula to freeze it in shape. They called this TCM – traditional Chinese medicine that is neither traditional Nor does it demonstrate the incredible power that authentic ancient Chinese medicine contained within it. After forcing the Chinese doctors to give up all of their alternative thinkings, then president Richard Nixon was invited over to China where he witnessed some surgical operations using no anesthetics except for acupuncture.

Suitably impressed, American hospitals were allowed to develop experimental acupuncture programs for things like drug addiction and alcoholism and schools of acupuncture began to pop up like mushrooms in the dark. This form of Chinese medicine called TCM (which is a misnomer of the worst kind) and which can be taught to any adult by rote, makes books like this shine like diamonds in a mud bath that seems to be taking over Western medicine's more difficult issues. Where Western medicine is valuable in structural medicine and in the administration of poisons against symptoms, Chinese medicine actually has herbs and acupuncture to be taken by the healthy to achieve something called radiant health or Wei Qi, meaning a health that has a boundary larger than the body and thus disease cannot even approach the body. In addition, Chinese medicine had no psychology or psychiatry – everything is considered somatic and all the emotions stored in various organs in the body such as the ZangFu, a set of 5 Yin and 5 Yang organs. Yin organs being considered solid as places of storage for the emotions, which are all valuable tools in a healthy toolbox. As a for instance, anger is stored in the liver and is considered to be an appropriate response to a thwarting of one's will. This is anger as a tool, not being angry but using anger. And there are 5 emotions connected with these 5 elements that have very definite interconnections. Anger, joy, worry, grief, and fear are stored in the 5 Yin organs. This book is a delight and I only wish I had purchased the hardcover version rather than Kindle.

One of best books for learning cartoon caricature!

June, 2001- I own more than twenty books on the subject of how to draw caricatures and cartoons. Following only five weeks of practice, I recently started working part time as a caricature artist at a major theme park (mostly for the fun of it). I have no previous experience in art or drawing. Studying Redman's book did more for me than any other. The key to success in caricature is being able to produce a clean, simple sketch that has adequate likeness to the subject's face yet, in a kind way, also employs some fun with "exaggeration" -- not distortion. Redman's book does the best job, for the complete beginner, of any text out there. This is one of the only instructional references that makes a special point to include at least one and often several photographic views of each subject before showing you how to construct the basic caricature drawing. There are many such examples of photo studies and caricature results. He also covers children and and a wide variety of ethnic groups. Redman includes examples of how to draw the same subject using several different caricature styles. There are also examples of famous people done in caricature. Too many of these to even count. If you combine this book with Jack Hamm's Cartooning: The Head & Figure to learn cartoon bodies to go along with the faces, you have a great pair of reference books. As a cautionary note, Redman's book does contain some cartoon nudity which I feel was not needed at all to make the text a valuable learning reference. Parents might want to remove these few pages before the book is used by children. This is a great learning tool. Good luck!
July 2, 2002- As a follow up to the above review, for those seeking the very best caricature training references, I must add a third book from the many that I have reviewed. I recently purchased, for a reference on cartooning, The BIG Book of Cartooning by Bruce Blitz. To my surprise and delight this turned out to be perhaps the best text yet on CARICATURE as the art form is applied in theme parks and private parties. Like Redman's book, Blitz offers many training exercises starting with actual photos of the person to be sketched and showing step by step how to "construct" the caricature. More than this, Blitz ties together at a beginner to intermediate level the techniques of "catching" a caricature likeness and adds a huge resource of comic techniques and gag ideas.
Redman's and Jack Hamm's books are still the best for starting to draw caricature. However, a theme park or private party caricaturist in their early years of development will see a BIG jump in skill, income, and tips after a thorough study of Blitz's BIG Book of Cartooning. Blitz's book, having been published in 1998 is more current in its examples and styles, and, due to its emphasis on gags and cartooning, more likely to hold the interest of young artists of say junior high or high school age. The best book ever written on how to draw caricatures

The most comprehensive book ever written on the challenging art and science of drawing caricatures! Lenn shows multiple examples of each face, showing how each decision the artist makes can lead to very different interpretations of the subject's features. The book is well organized and, naturally, copiously illustrated with examples of every race, gender, age, and body type imaginable. There is no other book on caricatures that covers the 'how' and 'what' quite so well as this gem of an art instruction book

Very nice lessons in this book

I really like this book very much. I do think that there is an expectation of a certain amount of artistic ability from the get go but there is a certain amount of rudimentary skill building included as well.
It is a nice large size that I think is necessary for art instruction books and it is also a fairly big book as far as total pages go. One issue I have with many *how to draw* books is that they tend to be pretty thin. This is quite a nice size.
In the beginning there are a lot of examples of types and styles of features that people have...not in caracature form but just in general. I like this. I find this very helpful in general drawing as well as helping you focus on what features you can play up for the art of caricature. Proportion is also discussed with an eye on how to manipulate it. It is also a great lesson in general drawing.
The examples that are used to show what to do are quite good. there is a photo (or photos) on the page and the drawing that accentuates certain of the features. It's very helpful, I think, to start with an actual photo and see how the artist picked up on certain features in his finished drawing. I do notice that the people selected for photos *do* tend to have obvious traits that are easy to pick up on (a VERY square jaw... A *very* pointed chin... Large bags under the eyes, etc) I think this does get you used to looking for these things but perhaps a few more examples of less obvious features would be a big help.
Over all I like this book very much. It shows different styles and while the focus is on the caricature it isnt on making the subject look bizarre. Quite a good first book.

About the Author
The first and second editions of this guidebook were written by Patricia L Baker PhD, an independent lecturer and researcher specialising in Islamic art, who died in August 2008. This edition is updated by her close friend and colleague, Hilary A Smith MPhil, an independent lecturer and guide who first visited Iran in 1976 and has been returning regularly ever since.

Maybe the best guide if your main interest is the culture and history of Iran, but second-best for the independent traveller

The intrepid visitor to Iran is in for a deeply rewarding experience. This enormous, varied and little-visited country is full of wonders and surprises; it's very safe for travellers and in many ways easier for the visitor than most other destinations in the region. Follow a few simple rules, and you can't go wrong.

The choice of guide books, however, is limited at the time of writing to just two: Lonely Planet and Bradt. Of the two, the LP guide is definitely the most useful with the greatest amount of accurate information about where to stay, how to get from A to B and other practicalities high on the priority list for the traveller. It's important to have a guide book for Iran because internet access is difficult and slow, cellphone networks congested and almost impossible to access in the daytime (especially in Tehran) and English not widely understood.

The Bradt guide, however, is not without value. It's written by Patricia Baker, an academic with an interest in Islamic art and costume, and the weight of content reflects these specialist cultural interests at the expense of travel practicalities.

The first 66 pages are devoted to Iranian history, politics and religion and to basic practicalities like best time to visit, visas, health issues and tour operators. The author tends to discourage independent travel to Iran and recommends an organised tour, as (according to her) Iranian officialdom is more comfortable with groups who can be managed and controlled more easily. I have to say I found travelling independently around Iran quite easy, especially with a positive attitude and the helpful and invariably accurate advice in the LP guide, so do not agree with Ms. Baker on this issue.

The second part of the book has a chapter devoted to each of the major cities and regions of the country, and is OK but can be a rather dry read. Often the author recommends only one place to stay in each location, whereas for example the LP guide invariably details many options accurately and so is more useful to the traveller.

The four separate colour photo sections are pretty good, but again betray the author's prime interest in the architecture, archaeology and cultural relics which, it needs to be said, in Iran are plentiful and often truly magnificent, especially in Isfahan and Shiraz. However the fun and adventure is somehow missing (yes, you can have both in Iran), and the text is not exactly racy or humorous.

So overall, the Bradt Guide might be best for the visitor whose primary interest is in the history, culture and architecture of Iran and who chooses to go on an organised tour where accommodation is booked in advance and taken care of - or if for some reason you don't like the style of LP guides, this is your only option.

An absolute "must-read" for any male or female visitor to Iran

Patricia Baker is a lecturer, writer and tour leader specializing in Islamic are and having traveled to Iran over 16 times since her first visit in 1971. She draws from his considerable experience and expertise in Iran: The Bradt Travel Guide to provide the tourist, student, or businessman with guidance on cultural awareness, religious sensitivity, and absolute do's and don'ts as well as a region-by-region guideline to getting around in different areas of Iran with black-and-white maps to follow. An absolute "must-read" for any male or female visitor to Iran, as familiarity with rules and customs could spare one from an unhappy detention; for example, the Iranian prohibition against cards, gambling and backgammon extends to such things as fuzzy car dice, woman must not walk unescorted at night or they will be presumed prostitutes, and no visitor should eat, drink, or smoke during the daylight hours of the Ramadan religious holidays regardless of their personal faith, else the repercussions to themselves and their sponsors will be severe. Yet Iran: The Bradt Travel Guide is far more than a list of proscriptions and warnings; it is also a tour of the cultural and historical wonders of Iran, a glimpse into the recent transformations of the society, and an in-depth guide of where to go and what to experience. Now in an updated second edition, Iran: The Bradt Travel Guide is a "must-have" for visitors who want not only to see the sights of this proud nation, but to understand its character as much as possible.

Useless

This guide is only useful if you're planning to visit the Iran of 2000 years ago. Practical information is non-existant, hardly any reasonable hotels are mentioned and there are few if any travel details. Unlike most Bradt guides it's written for scholars and archeologists and not travellers who need detailed information about this complex country.

Great for the holidays!

I purchased this book for Keith Chapman's arrangement of "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella" as it is a very impressive, yet challenging piece. I didn't get to use it since I was gone for Christmas, and didn't have enough time to work it up to the level I wanted it to be, but really enjoyed using the settings of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "Away in a Manger" for offertory/prelude selections. "Pastorale" and "Gaelic Air" (variations on O Danny Boy) are also great and appropriate for nearly any time of the year. There are several other great settings in there appropriate for the holidays that I haven't tackled yet, but all in all the book is wonderful.

This is a very clear crisp and precise book humble really breaks down and simplifys his ideas into something which can be learnt and followed by his readers instantly. He does not beat around the bush and does not sell any sort of fantasy stories that seem unrealistic. I think people should definitely invest some money into this item because its a very good read :)

Best book for young adults and adults who want to act like adults

This is a great book about what it means to grow up and act like an adult. Humble the Poet is a true poet. He has a gift to say complex thoughts very clearly and his book does just that for 101 challenges everyone will face in their life. I think everyone should read this book at some point in their life. It will be most useful for teenagers and people in their 20s.

This is helpful as it means the information is accessible to all; you can start from the beginning and work through full chapters, or simply access a particular area you are interested in...There is the additional benefit of an online self-assessment module, available once you purchase the book, which contains multiple choice questions, extended matching questions and 'drag and drop' style questions. I don't think you can pass finals without at least getting it out of your dental school library for long periods. You really ought to have your own copy!

About the Author
Eric Whaites heads up the Unit of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiological Imaging at King’s College London Dental Institute based at Guy’s Hospital in London as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant. He qualified from Guy's Hospital Dental School in 1978. Following a couple of years in general dental practice, he returned to Guy’s in 1981 and the following year obtained his Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, in 1984 he obtained his MSc in Dental Radiology from the University of London and in 1990 obtained his Diploma in Dental Radiology (DDR) from the Royal College of Radiologists. Eric was awarded his Fellowship (FRCR) without examination by the Royal College of Radiologists in 2002 and the following year was awarded FDS ad eundem by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Eric is registered on the General Dental Council’s specialist list for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology. He is a former President of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR), former President of the European Academy of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (EADMFR), former member of the DDR Examining Board of the Royal College of Radiologists and former Regional Adviser on Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology to the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Eric is a well known national and international lecturer on all aspects of dental and maxillofacial radiology.

Nicholas Drage is a Consultant and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University Dental Hospital in Cardiff. He qualified from Guy's Dental School in 1989 and, after a year in general dental practice, spent four years in junior hospital posts in various specialities including oral and maxillofacial surgery obtaining his Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1994. He worked in the Unit of Dental Radiology at Guy’s Hospital for seven years from 1995-2002, firstly as a specialist registrar and then as a lecturer. He obtained his Diploma in Dental Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists in 1997. Nicholas is registered on the General Dental Council’s specialist list for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, has headed up the Unit of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology within the University Dental Hospital in Cardiff since 2002 and is currently a member of the Diploma in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (DDMFR) Examining Board of the Royal College of Radiologists. He is responsible for teaching the BDS dental imaging course and lectures on a number of additional post-graduate radiological and radiation protection courses across the UK. He is President-elect of the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR).
