Peter McHoy is a well-known author and journalist. He first worked as a seed analyst, but moved into magazine journalism. He has written more than 60 books and writes gardening features for a number of magazines. Tessa Evelegh is a writer, stylist and craft artist. She writes about using plants and flowers in the home and contributes to The Sunday Times, the Telegraph magazine, Inspirations, Period Living and BBC Good Food. She is the author of 500 Decorating Tips for the House & Garden (Southwater).

I love this book

I love this book! Not just a collection of pretty pictures of gardens, (although there are lots of them) this book actually helps you to think through your own designs. Tons of clever ideas provide a starting point, and her helpful hints can save you from a great many "learning" experiences figuring out why what you have isn't what you want.

About the Author
Rabindranath Tagore (1861 1941), is to the Indian subcontinent what Shakespeare is to the English-speaking world. A poet, playwright, painter, and educator, Tagore was also a mystic of great complexity and depth. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.

The Cruel Idea Behind Making of a Nation

No wonder why this great poet and literature genius has been awarded the Nobel Prize. Anyone who reads this book clearly gets an understanding as to how much this author has studied human mind and its social aspects that had been troubling the humanity ever since power and materialistic possessions have taken over spiritual freedom.
The book is divided into three parts- Nationalism in the West, Nationalism of Japan and Nationalism in India.
Rabindranath’s idea about a Nation is that of an evolution of a great organization of human mind, wealth, machines and power to control the minds and bodies of all that is surrounding this great artificial body. As per him, Power is a scientific product made in the political laboratory of the Nation, through the dissolution of personal humanity. As per him the West is necessary to the East and vice versa. His main target is the British (whenever he referred as Nation) rule in India and its ill effects on the moral and spiritual efficacies of the people of India. He ripped apart the cruel motives behind the industrial, economic, educational, social and political policies of Europe against all those countries it invaded and captured with main focus on how it affected India, whose history has been made across different races over centuries of suffering and learning not by material organization but by natural social cooperation and spiritual freedom.
He praises Japan and America for its different approach towards Nationalism unlike Europe. He appreciates the ideology of these Nations which imbibed power and wealth through love and admiration but not through ambition and greed. He warns the forces of Nation against the creation of politicians, soldiers, manufacturers and bureaucrats which he says shall bring down the entire gigantic organization of the Nation one day to bite the dust. That would be the day when the East would come back into its hay days and start a new history. He appeals to Japan and America to view the ideologies and histories of many countries like India which cannot be called as Nations due to their diverse coexistence of different races with respect and positive approach instead of insulting them and treating them as beggars.

The reader would be awestruck to come across such a vast expanse of usage of English verbatim in this book. I am totally perplexed by the way European organization has been constructively criticized apart by the author at the same time warning it of the detrimental effects it would have if they force upon spiritual countries like India.

The author seems to have totally targeted the European way of conquering the World through its massive Organization of military and commerce, but seems to have ignored the benefits it brought upon all those countries it went to. The benefits might be undervalued compared to the exploitation and conflicts it created in those Nations.

A book very much for our times

This Penguin reprint is important and timely. I believe that, among other things, Tagore's NATIONALISM should be thoroughly read and carefully thought about by every member of both the British Parliament and the U.S. Congress and White House. (There are also closely related things in the middle pieces of Tagore's CREATIVE UNITY and in his LETTERS TO A FRIEND.) The indictment of the nationalism developed in the West and the account of the contrasting ways in which human beings have related to each other in older civilisations of the East have the strongest application to our own times. Knowledge of them could also promote a more sympathetic understanding of current suspicion of and hostility to the West. The West has given much to the rest of the world, but Tagore shows and/or reminds us that it also owes the world the gravest apology. He himself writes at one point in the later CREATIVE UNITY that the post-WW1 move to 'internationalism' made little difference to the arrogance and greed that still governed much of the West's behaviour to the rest of the world. Those vices obviously still govern much of it now, as in the appalling invasion of Iraq. The full and proper making of that grave apology to the rest of the world could help promote worldwide peace by being the start of a more concilatory because penitent attitude in the West - to, among others, the so-called Islamic 'extremists'.

Demistified Nationalism

The book enlightens us about when and how the term nationalism got into use. Rabindranath Tagor explain us the dangers of commercial and political short sightedness. Nationalism in practice makes people fight against each other under the pseudo identity given by nationalism.

Book is very interested for the people who think about the society at large, worried about the fights between people under various banners, tries to find out the solution.

Book is not giving effective solution. It only makes readers to think over the issues.

About the Author

Claire is an independent UX design, research and product strategy consultant working on internet of things products and services for mainstream consumers. She has a particular interest in the use of technology in mundane, everyday activities. Previously, she worked on energy management and home automation services as the service design manager for AlertMe.com, a connected home platform provider. Prior to this, she was Head of Research for the London studio of design consultancy Fjord, where she led Fjord's involvement in the Smarcos EU consortium researching the interusability of interconnected embedded devices and services. She has worked in UX design and research for mobile, multiplatform and web services since 1997.

Elizabeth Goodman investigates the possibilities and perils of emerging technologies in her design, research, and writing. Her 2014 PhD from UC Berkeley's School of Information focused on human-computer interaction and design practice for novel technologies, and was supported by National Science Foundation and Intel fellowships. In 2013 she authored the second edition of Observing the User Experience, a widely-used handbook of design research methods. Her work has taken her from exploratory research and design teams at Intel, Yahoo!, and Fuji-Xerox to her current position with 18F, a service and product design group within the US government aimed at making federal agencies more efficient, more transparent, more accessible, and more accountable to the people they serve. Elizabeth speaks widely on the design of mobile and pervasive computing systems at conferences, schools, and businesses. She lives in San Francisco with her husband and two children. She tweets as @egoodman.

German-born Martin Charlier is an independent design consultant based in London. Martin is a designer with experience across new media art, industrial design, interaction design and design research. His speculative design work has been awarded by the Royal Society of Arts, and he is a fellow of the organization.

He has previously worked at innovation firm frog design, cutting-edge art collective rAndom International and digital service design consultancy Fjord.

While at Fjord he was involved in the EU-funded Smarcos research project investigating design for the Internet of Things. With his broad range of design skills, Martin's focus is on holistic product and service experiences going across the digital and the physical.

Alfred Lui has been a user experience designer for consumer products since 2004. He created user interfaces and digital services for companies around the world, including The BBC, Motorola, PayPal and Jawbone. In London, he was part of a EU-funded research project to investigate best practices in designing networked objects. Soon after he moved to San Francisco in 2011, he founded the San Francisco Internet of Things Meetup to build a local community around the topic. Alfred frequently writes and speaks about user experience design for the Internet of Things.

An extremely useful primer on UX design for IoT

When you venture into user experience design for tangible products you suddenly find yourself feeling horribly alone. The failure rate for IoT startups is scarily high: around 90% according to some reports. Few people understand how to ensure their product meets real user needs. Very few deeply understand both software and hardware design. Then there are networking problems and a Pandora's box of privacy and security issues, as well as all the unknown unknowns. Where in software design there are a ton of resources to turn to, this is uncharted territory.

The authors of this book are pretty much as expert as you can get in design for connected products and they've created a very thorough primer here. I'd go as far as to say it's a complete lifesaver. As well as UX design it deals with the research phase and product strategy, and briefs you on hardware design and networking pitfalls. I found loads of pointers that would never have occurred to me but which make absolute sense.

Although it's a pretty hefty book it's not a heavy read since it's well structured and the writing is clear and collegial. You can dip in where you need, using it as a handbook as you work. You get the feeling you have an expert friend by your side to whom you can turn to for advice. That's very comforting.

Every IoT professional or entrepreneur needs a copy of this on their desktop. I am one and I swear by it as a source of learning and as an inspiring reference when formulating new product propositions.

I originally bought a copy of this electronically from OReilly. I subsequently loved the book so much I paid for a paper copy to sit on my desk with the other IoT references I use. ( Kindle is great but not really “browseable” as paper is. Sorry poor tree.)

IoT is at a very nascent stage and useful IoT products even more so. Customer value propositions for IoT products are not clear yet and excitingly represent a new frontier of great big opportunity. We are with IoT where the web was in 1994 and where the Personal Computer was in 1979. It’s really cool tech and we know it will be really useful soon but there is a lot of painful learning to be done and a lot of grammar’s on use and UX to be written, before we create the killer app’s that will make IoT products “must have’s”. That;s why you need this book as one of your guides.

What a book like this does is bring the best of what has been deeply thought about by some of the best professionals working on IoT services each day – Claire Rowland and Elizabeth Goodman whose previous work I have followed in papers and conference talks. In Elizabeth Goodman’s case her partners book – Smart Things by Mike Kuniavsky – was one of the first and still a landmark book on IoT / Smart devices. These professionals have been kind and diligent enough to document their learning and discoveries to create a “cookbook” of good IoT ideas and axioms.

If you work in the field on the product or service implementation side - I strongly suggest you get a copy of this book to catalyze your own thinking, in this fast growing and frankly exhilarating field. It's not a tech book, it's a design book. It will inspire new ideas and save you a boat load of time.

Outstanding book that covers the entire ecosystem of connected products.

As a digital media professional I found this book to be really valuable. The authors have done a good job of touching upon all relevant aspects with concrete examples of the latest products and it's pretty obvious that a ton of research went into this material. I keep myself abreast of the latest trends in Gadgets, Home Automation, Digital Media etc so was not expecting to find anything new but the first couple of pages itself listed some products/concepts that kept me engaged in the material. It also acts as a showcase of the brightest and the best Internet of things projects and products. This is certainly more than a UX book as it covers all of the technology issues around connected devices basically the entire ecosystem.

The last couple of books by K.E. Osborn haven't left me hanging, so I had forgotten her diabolically evil genius at doing so. But it's safe to say that the queen of mean cliff hangers is back stronger than ever. She was one of the very first authors on the list trying to kill me, but her writing is amazing, that I simply cannot give up reading her books as soon as they come out. In case no one has guessed yet, I LOVED LOVED LOVED Heart of Steel.

Steel is a biker in the Savages MC. A Marauder Japanese Steel Knife is his weapon of choice, and it brings out fear in enemies. He's never had any desire to have a relationship with anyone, but things changed suddenly when he rescues a child in the road from getting run over. Willow is a kindergarten teacher, who shakes Steel's whole world up. She isn't meant for his world, but he can't stay away from her, and it doesn't help that she feels the strong connection they have, so she won't walk away either. Will Willow be able to accept Steel for who he is, or will she walk away, missing her chance at something worth the risk?!

WOW WOW WOW! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this author's rockers, but she took it to a new level with bikers. The character development is spot on perfect, with secondaries that I would love to see have their own stories. An action packed, fast paced, and very well written story line flows effortlessly. K.E. Osborn's brilliant writing style has, once again, held me hostage cover to cover, while keeping my heart racing. Heart of Steel showcases her extremely talented writing style on new levels. Well placed humor had me rolling in laughter, and the suspense is very intense. The chemistry flew out of my kindle, leading to SCORCHIN' HOT sexy scene goodness that's capable of causing severe hot flashes. The cliff hanger ending had me calling the author bad names, as she's trying to kill me. And to be honest, the whole series can't come quickly enough to feed my addiction, as this author will always be my kindle crack. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Not your typical MC.

This book starts out with a great little blurb by Steel, introducing himself to us and Willow introducing herself to us. I love the fact that KE Osbourne has given us a little note about the writing style of the book as well as a dictionary to help us understand some of the slang we will be seeing in the book in case we're not familiar with the terminology. Thank you KE Osbourne for that! This book was your typical rough and tumble, fighting and protecting book, with one of the bad boys of the MC falling in love with an outsider. HOWEVER, the level of things in this book, I do not remember having seen them like this before. The losses, the wars, the love, the pain and suffering that comes with love and loss and finding things again. Desires, hope, etc. are all in this book, and the pure bad@$$ bad boys are also there. This book leaves you on one heck of a cliff hanger. One that I just did NOT see coming. Read the book, enjoy it, and wait for book two to see what happens with Willow and Steel after they have to take off. Wait until you see why they do. Wow.

Excellent !!!

One of my go to authors of 2015 has kicked this new year of with bang and taken a foray into one of my favourite genres…an MC novel!
I was super excited to get my teeth into this as if the previous works have been anything to go by this was a hands down winner…and I was not disappointed, Ms Osborn I doff my hat to you, you hit the ground running with this and now that the motor is revving I can’t wait to see what you have in store next.
This is Willow and Steel’s story and if ever there was a case of opposite attract then it is this pair, they are as far apart on the spectrum as you could possibly imagine…or are they?
Willow was her mother’s perfect child, the obedient little girl that toe the line but she is no little girl anymore and she is ready to cut loose, to live a little and to find out for herself all about the things her mamma thought she never needed to know.
Especially what it is like to be the bad girl for once!!!
And finding just the sort of man that her mother wouldn’t want to see walking up the path is going to prove a little easier than she had imagined, especially when her nice ordered life is intersected by the world that is Steel and the Satan’s Savages MC.
Steel has lived and breathed the MC his entire life, he has learnt the ropes at eth knee of its president, his father but that doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t give his right arm to know what life minus the violence would be like. Life in the club is harsh and hard but with no other point of reference, Steel can only imagine what else he could have had.
But when he and Willow meet, the instant attraction may just answer both their questions. Because for Willow he is the man she has been searching for and for Steel, Willow is his peek into the world he was born to be denied.
Being together is a path down which they will need to tread very carefully as it is littered with both danger and deceit. They face trouble from every quarter and unfortunately it some of it is directed from the men that Steel call bothers.
The story is one that doesn’t hold back, but that is to be expected by this author, she leaves no stone unturned in her pursuit of excellence and this is just that…excellent!
