"Excellent Resource! Five Stars! This book is a fount of information! It not only includes how to perform the moves but the history of Chinese martial arts itself. I learned so much while reading it.It provides a comprehensive look at the art of Tai Chi Chuan, its history, and the theory and practices behind it. Towards the end there are pictures that show the movements of this martial art and, again, explain in great detail how and why to perform them in such a way – as well as the many ways they can be modified to different results. All in all, I'm very glad I have this book – it's beautifully put together with a lot of information. Tai Chi Chuan contains 402 pages, so there's a LOT of history, information, and practice here. About the Author
Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is a renowned author and teacher of Chinese martial arts and Qigong. Born in Taiwan, he has trained and taught Taijiquan, Qigong and Chinese martial arts for over forty-five years. He is the author of over thirty books, and was elected by Inside Kung Fu magazine as one of the 10 people who has "made the greatest impact on martial arts in the past 100 years." Dr. Yang lives in Northern California.

Tai Chi Chuan, Classical Yang Style, 2nd ed.

If you are not familiar with the first edition of this book, you cannot appreciate the great improvements that have been made in this one, the second edition. Now you will find more than Figure numbers under the hundreds of action photos that are found in Chapters Three and Four. Instead, you will find complete sentences, even paragraphs, with specific guidance that will allow you to better understand how to make your classical Yang style Tai Chi Chuan more effective. When it comes to the theory and history of Tai Chi Chuan, Dr. Yang never fails his readership. In addition, Dr. Yang's scientific background also comes into play. Perhaps you have never fully understood bioelectricity before, but if you read this book, you will; moreover, you will learn how the complete long form and qigong are closely tied to this phenomenon. Dr. Yang writes: "Every living blood cell has to have qi to keep living." And "Each blood cell can be thought of as a small battery, which contains the `charge' of bioelectricity," that is, the qi. Do not forget to follow along with the DVD that accompanies this new edition. Among other topics are lectures on taiji qigong and taijiquan, and demonstrations of various sets of exercises and movements that are found in the book. This is a book you will want to have handy when you practice Tai Chi Chuan Classical Yang Style.

Excellent First Text from Dr. Yang

Full disclosure. I received my copy for review from the publisher.

If you look at my other reviews for YMAA materials you'll see that I don't readily gush about Taiji books. That said, this is the book I would want to use if I was starting fresh with the Yang Long Form.

After three years of daily practice in Cheng Man-ch'ing form (a martial context) I was compelled to attend a class in the Yang long form. The one hour a week class included a competent teacher leading the form in a health context and offering very general correction, mostly adjusting my CMC habits to her version of Old Yang. Without this book I'm afraid I would have had little more to go on.

This material is everything a newcomer would need short of personal instruction. The stepping directions are offered for each image. There are very helpful arrows showing lines of movement and expressed energy. There is a section with martial applications and plenty on applicable Qigong.

The production values for the book are quite good. The cover has a very classy texture and the printing and proofreading are good enough to be invisible. I only mention them here because I've complained in the past.

I've also grumbled silently in the past about frequent references to other YMAA books. It often seemed in the past that I would need to buy another book if I was going to find the information to continue down an interesting path. Not so here. There is enough on each subject to give a full meal. Other books are referenced but only to supplement. This IS as complete a guide as one could want in a single volume.

In my Ba duan jin review I recommended choosing either the book or DVD. For this book I would actually recommend both to anybody who does not have a teacher. If you are considering the video, I have heard it repeated that Dr. Yang's Taiji is a bit different from the common classical style. You may wish to research this further if it is a concern to you.

Another Stellar Addition to the Great Works of Dr. Yang and YMAA

Well it looks like Dr. Yang and YMAA have done it again with another fantastic addition to the literary library of Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming with this latest literary source dedicated to the classical Yang Style of Tai Chi Chuan. Hence the obvious title of the book.

Apparently this book also has a companion DVD that goes with it, but sadly I didn't receive that DVD, so I won't be able to provide any kind of reference to it, but if it is anything like Dr. Yang's previous DVD's, and I am sure that it is, then it will be another in a long line of excellent DVD's by Dr. Yang and YMAA.

This book is divided into five main chapters, with several sub-chapters included under each main chapter. The first chapter was really quite interesting as Dr. Yang takes you through quite a bit of history concerning; China, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and it's history both in the East and in the West. Dr. Yang also spends some time explaining the differences between Northern and Southern styles, as well as, internal and external styles, hard styles and soft styles, and the four categories of fighting skills. He then spends a considerable amount of time discussing the history and benefits of Taijiquan, which is the intended purpose of this book.

Chapter two focuses on Qi, Qigong Taijiquan with categories of Qigong, various schools and training theories and the relationship between Qigong and Taijiquan.

Chapter three focuses solely on the Taijiquan Thirteen Postures, of which there are the eight doors and five steppings.

Chapter four introduces you to the traditional Yang style Taijiquan, which is very informative and the amount of knowledge contained in this section pertaining to this particular style is exceptional.

The book then concludes with chapter five, which is primarily a glossary of Chinese names and terms translated into English.

This is definitely a MUST HAVE book for all Tai Chi Chuan practitioners, especially those interested in the classical Yang style of Tai Chi Chuan.

About the Author
John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He teaches courses on mixed methods research, qualitative inquiry, and general research design. In these three areas, he has authored numerous scholarly journal articles, book chapters and books. He is currently working on his 22nd book (including new editions), and his books are translated into many languages around the world. At Nebraska he founded the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research and has held the Clifton Endowed Chair. He also co-founded the SAGE journal, the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and has been a popular speaker on mixed methods and qualitative research in the US and abroad. As an applied research methodologist, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and as a consultant for the VA health services research unit in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a methodologist, he helped to design the methods for a number of successful NIH and NSF projects. He has been a Senior Fulbright Specialist scholar to both South Africa (2008) and Thailand (2012) lecturing on qualitative and mixed methods approaches to research. Recently, he served as a co-leader of a national working group developing “best practices” for mixed methods research at the National Institutes of Health in the US. Invaluable for researchers and PhD students

I initially bought this book when I writing the proposal for my PhD about three years ago and Cresswell's little gem proved invaluable during that time. The book is very well written and unlike other books on the topic, Cresswell is not content with explaining theory and providing examples but goes further to provide excellent templates for the process, writing, structure, and format of every phase of the research process. These 'templates,' coupled with a clear writing style and an excellent, logical structure, elevate the book from 'very useful' to 'invaluable' in my opinion.

For example, in chapter 4: The Introduction, he begins by explaining the purpose of the Introduction and its importance and then provides models for writing introduction in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research. This format is mirrored in almost every chapter including Chapter 2: Review of the literature where he provides an excellent process for maximizing the effectiveness of the initial literature review process. In Chapter 5, he simplifies purpose statements with step-by-step guidelines for the three methodologies while in Chapter 6 he does the same for the research questions and hypotheses.

While Cresswell is an Educational Researcher himself, he does not limit the examples in the book to his field but endeavors to include samples from the social and human sciences including justice, management, psychology, sociology and marketing. These numerous examples throughout every chapter of the book serve to illustrate the templates and guidelines effectively, leaving little doubt in the reader's mind on the 'how' of applying the guidelines.

Overall, this is the best of the pick if you need clear, straightforward guidelines on writing a proposal or planning your research project. If you are considering a Mixed Methods methodolgy, then I would strongly recommend Creswell's other book, written with Vicki Clark, Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research.

Great Book for Beginning Researchers

My impression of "Research Design" is that Creswell sincerely wanted readers to understand how to conduct thorough research with confidence. While I focused more on the chapters on qualitative and mixed-methods research, the quantitative chapter was equally easy to understand as the more inquiry-based methods. As an education student, I've always feared doing quantitative research, however this book makes it as available and comprehensible as either of the other two methods discussed. However, I would venture to guess that if you were in a highly technical field, this book would not suffice to supply you with the complete methodologies to conduct quantitative research.
The author conveniently structures each chapter with the learner in mind. For each section of the book, Creswell supplies easy to follow steps and checklists for students and researchers to cover most angles of research. At the completion of each chapter (all of which are short and easy to digest), there is a small section on writing practice to provide practical application for the reader who might not have a professor to rely on for further instruction, or for the professor who wants an easy, practical assignment right from the text. I studied this book independently, and while I feel a second read through might be in order, it was absolutely easy to understand and useful in my independent study.
I recommend this book for its straightforward style and practical approach to conducting basic research.

PreSchool-K-Even the closest friendship must weather the occasional storm. Such is the case with a preschool boy and girl who share in all kinds of creative play. Theirs is a relationship made in heaven until harsh words are spoken and they shout at one another. The boy describes his anger, feigned indifference, sadness, and loneliness all resulting from the spat. He muses that if his friend were as sad as he is "She would come and say, 'I'm sorry,' and I would say sorry, too." While the youngster's desire for reconciliation is admirable, these sentiments give a mixed message about apologizing. Additionally, the cause of the disagreement is not explained in either the pictures or the text. Since many young children are very concerned with issues of fairness, this omission may be troubling, even though the point is clearly not to assign blame to either child. Lovely illustrations represent the preschoolers and their familiar surroundings with a softened realism. Renderings of the children's faces are especially effective in conveying the emotions McBratney describes. Despite some modest quibbles with the story line, this gentle vignette nicely portrays a friendship between the genders.

The author of Guess How Much I Love You (1995) offers a simple, straightforward contemporary story about a falling-out between two best friends that hints at a resolution but cleverly leaves it up to young listeners to decide if they agree. Eachus' gauzy, dappled watercolors and 1940s-style English countryside settings convey an old-fashioned, cozy feeling to the story about a subject that might otherwise have been upsetting to youngsters. The young boy narrator tells of his friendship with a little girl--exploring the farm, teaching dolls to read, being doctors and fixing broken bones. Then there's a sudden argument ("I SHOUTED at my friend today, and she SHOUTED back at me"), and the children avoid each other. The friendship seems irreparable until the little boy imagines what his friend would do if she were as sad as he. Gentle and understated in both text and art, this has a great deal to teach about empathy and forgiveness. The rich paper quality allows for repeated reading. Connie Fletcher

A great apology

I like this book because it is sweet and simple. It talksabout friendship and love and being hurt and saying "I'msorry". The illustrations are adorable. This is a great book to teach young children about apologizing and would also be a great gift to give as an apology to a friend, sister, brother, husband, or anyone who needs it. It would be hard not to accept such a sweet apology.

Good for conflict resolution between children

I'm Sorry, by Sam McBratney, focuses on all of the positive sides of a good friendship. The joys of a young boy is shared with his best friend. They play well together until one day they encounter a problem. Mr. McBratney does a great job of capturing how children feel after they have had a conflict and are no longer friends. At first I thought it was the boy who should apologize first, but then I realized that children always expect the other person to make the first move.
The book can be used for children K-3 to highlight the joys of good friendships and how to share with one another. Even though there they share many great times together, just one "mistake" can take it all away. It teaches children how to be careful of how they treat one another. When conflicts occur, they must be resolved or else both parties will pay the consequences - usually loneliness and sadness.
Jennifer Eachus has done a superb job of illustrating the story. In my opinion it's of Caldecott quality. Her artwork is soft and beautiful and captures detail through her "old-fashioned" touch. I chose the book in part for it's outstanding illustrations.

No one actually says "I'm sorry"!

This book is gorgeous. The illustrations will draw in child and adult alike. The emotions are portrayed honestly in a way children will easily identify.
But why, for the love of Pete, can't the book end with an actual apology and resolution instead of an imagined one? The narrator, a little boy, sulks to himself "If she were as sad as I am sad, here is what she would do", namely say she's sorry, even though apparently the little boy SHOUTED at his friend first.
I very nearly bought this book after skimming it at the bookstore, enchanted by the beautiful pictures. I thought my 4 year old could really use a model of an apology, but that's not what this book is. Thank goodnes I read it through carefully.
I gave it two stars to acknowledge the incredible artwork, but I wish it were in a different book.

A Valuable Resource For Implementing and Maintaining Security and Privacy On The Internet

If you think there is little to nothing you can do to maintain some sort of security and privacy when accessing the Internet, think again. The author of this book has provided information on a number of security products and strategies for the reader to choose from depending on his or her Internet activities and preferences. What I especially like about this book, even more than the many useful products and associated links, is the way the author expands on many of the products' descriptions and usage to help the reader establish a security "mindset". Having spent 20 years actively involved in the computer security field for a major financial institution, I consider this mindset to be critical for an Internet user if privacy and security are to be achieved and maintained.

There are many key topics covered in this book. First of all, the author provides considerable information on the highly effective Tor Project software, one of the most important tools for achieving privacy and anonymity on the Internet. Maybe you have a need for temporary e-mail addresses that forward mail to a "real" e-mail address? You will find out about products that do that too (I have made extensive use of one for years called GishPuppy). Or software for generating strong passwords, tactics for keeping your E-mails private, encrypting stored date, and tips on keeping financial transactions private including a nice section on Bitcoin. Plus there's more such as security considerations when using social networks, recommendations for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox extensions as well as mobile apps. There is much to like in this book.

I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review and feel fortunate in receiving it. Some of the products and strategies mentioned I was familiar with but there were others that were completely new to me. Highly recommended - both for those new to computer security and privacy issues as well as more seasoned users.

Offers More Information Than I'd Have Believed Possible

When Rob Robideau offered me a review copy of his e-book "Incognito Toolkit: Tools, Apps and Creative Methods for Remaining Anonymous, Private and Secure While Communicating, Publishing, Buying and Researching Online" (whew--the title is long enough to be the whole review!), I really didn't know what to expect. As a casual Internet user, but not a computer or communications expert by any means, I thought I already knew enough about online security issues to at least use secure passwords, and to take certain obvious, rudimentary steps to protect my privacy and personal information whilst browsing the Web.

As it turns out, I knew nothing.

Mr. Robideau's book is an amazing resource that contains more detailed, useful, nuts-and-bolts information than I would have believed he could cram into it. It's chock-full of techniques, tips and tricks that any and all Internet users need to know in order to protect themselves online. Oh, I suppose the NSA could defeat many or all of them, but at least Mr. Robideau offers practical ways for users to control the hemorrhaging of their personal information onto the Internet, and its possible use by unscrupulous parties.

His book is much more than first meets the eye. It also features embedded links to websites to hit for more information on many of the topics, and from which you can obtain, mostly free, the software applications and browser extensions that he recommends to improve your privacy and anonymity. A couple of the links I tried produced the dreaded 404 error, but most of them are active and relevant, and thus enormously increase the book's interactivity, scope and usefulness. The Lastpass and Fake Name Generator applications, for example, especially interest me. Every Internet user should find these valuable. Some of his discussions are more technical than I could absorb completely on a first pass, and some seem intended for those with more paranoia and/or less regard for the law than I, and presumably most other readers, have. But his treatment of the subject is extremely thorough, and you can use as many or as few of his recommendations as you like. Even if you only adopt the minimum, you'll still be far better off--and far more anonymous online.

Before I read "Incognito Toolkit, etc., etc.," I didn't even know how much I didn't know about the subject. Now, armed with the valuable information and recommendations it contains, I will take steps to ensure my online privacy is protected to an appropriate degree. You should, too.

Informative, concise, and comprehensive.

I found this book packed with information that is very helpful to anyone wanting to reduce their digital footprint.
I know that I have not taken the time to gather all of the information related to doing this, but the author of this book has put in extensive time and research that in turn will save me and others the time of doing so. I learned several things while reading this book and got new ideas on how to use my information. I think that one could use this as a manual and be able to reference it frequently in order to use the tools contained within this book. This book was written with simplicity, even when talking about some of the things that some of us have never worked with before. The explanations and examples were very clear so that one who has never implemented anything like some of the tools being taught could understand very easily.

In today's age, your information is being attacked and used by criminals, governments, and corporations alike. All have varied agendas, but you are the one who suffers. Everyone should take at least some of the steps listed in this book. I feel that the information is valuable and certainly usable. It is worth the price being paid and much more since it can further protect your identity and personal information. Why do people buy products such as life-lock? For one of the many same reasons that this book was written. If these issues are important to you, then you should take a look at this book.

Robert Nye is a novelist and poet who was born in London. His other novels include "Falstaff", "Mrs. Shakespeare: The Complete Works", and "The Voyage of the Destiny". He lives in Ireland.

This is NOT Beowulf!

Robert Nye has rewritten the Beowulf saga into a nice little stand-alone fable, but it is so far from the original text that it is a disservice to new readers. Nye had his own idea of what the theme of Beowulf should be, but the original text does not support his theme, so Nye rewrote it until it did -- and then he crams the theme down the reader's throat as though it's the central point of the entire Beowulf saga. Nye's theme is that we should embrace our weaknesses and thereby make them our strengths (huh?), and he demonstrates this through Beowulf's nearsightedness and disproportionately short legs, neither of which are in the original text.
Nye's liberties with the original include making the Dane warrior Unferth a villain -- in the original, Unferth is at first jealous of Beowulf's courage until he sees it first-hand, at which point his jealousy turns to respect, and Beowulf respects him in return. In Nye's version Unferth is a treacherous villain throughout -- for example, in the original it is Grendel's mother who kills the king's friend Esher, but in Nye's version Unferth stabs him in the back. According to Nye, Unferth is then killed by Grendel's mother; in the original Unferth gives Beowulf his own sword to fight Grendel's mother, and this is the scene where Unferth and Beowulf become friends. Nye took a great supporting character and turned him into a cardboard villain.
I could go on listing ways in which Nye damages the saga, but I will instead cut to his most heinous crime -- Beowulf versus the dragon. In the original text, Beowulf gathers a band of his best warriors along with his friend Wiglaf to battle the dragon. When they see it, the warriors turn and run away in fear, and Beowulf attacks the dragon with only the loyal Wiglaf behind him. Beowulf succeeds at the cost of his own life, and dies at Wiglaf's side. In Nye's version, Beowulf is a part-time beekeeper, and he kills the dragon by having a bag of bees fly down its throat and sting it to death from the inside (I'm not making this up). There is no battle. Beowulf is never injured. Beowulf then simply dies on the mountain for no apparent reason other than his age.
I bought this book to read to my kids, but there is no way I will ever read it to them. It is a very easy read -- Nye tells a lively little tale, and his idea of using bees to kill the dragon is smoothly set up throughout the story -- but the major points of this so-called "new telling" are all Nye's, and run counter to the themes in the original. Anyone who reads this and thinks they've read Beowulf is VERY sorely mistaken, and their mistake will be immediately obvious to anyone who is familiar with the original text.

As dreadful as Grendel himself

Rather than offering my own opinion of this book, I will give you a few brief quotations describing the major characters and allow you to decide for yourself if this book is worth reading. Author Robert Nye describes the character of Beowulf as "weak and sickly" in his youth and "below average size" as an adult. He also describes Beowulf as "short sighted." He claims that Beowulf "admits to his weaknesses" and is "not given to boasting." This begs the question: what Beowulf is Nye talking about? The real Beowulf, the one that we know from the epic 7th century poem, was none of these things. We are told that he was neither small nor weak, but rather he possessed the strength of 30 men ("thirty men's might in the grip of his hand").This is how he was able to overpower his adversary, the demon Grendel, when no other man could challenge Grendel. The original Beowulf boasted quite often. Apparently, Robert Nye has his own idea of how a "hero" should behave. Instead of arrogance in Beowulf we see humility when he says, "He was a better swimmer than I" in reference to his dramatic swimming race against Breca. The problem here is that Beowulf did not lose this race with Breca. He won! But Nye's Beowulf cannot be all-powerful and still be humble, meek and peace-loving. We know from the original story that Beowulf cut off Grendel's head after he was dead, so he could offer it to the Danes as a trophy. This action was apparently too harsh for Nye. Instead, he tells us that Beowulf cut off Grendel's head in self-defense after Grendel momentarily came back from the dead!

The character of Unferth has also been dramatically altered. He is portrayed as both pathetic and evil, a drunkard full of contempt for Beowulf and his people. As such, his words carry no weight and he really serves no purpose in the story. The real Unferth was an insecure man, who was desperately afraid of Beowulf gaining more glory than him. But there is no evidence in the poem that he was evil or that he hated his own people.

The depiction of Grendel's mother in this book is downright laughable. Nye tells us that she has "red lips" and "hanging breasts." Furthermore, "she had eyes in her breasts." We are never told why she needs eyes in her breasts, but I guess the author just liked this visual.

Grendel's mother is also described as the "wife of Cain." According to Nye, Cain had sex with Grendel's mother (an evil serpent) and the resulting offspring was the hideous creature Grendel. To someone unfamiliar with the poem, this might seem logical. But this is where Robert Nye really misses the point (or chooses to ignore the point). Grendel is a descendant of Cain - this much is true. But Grendel's evil nature did not arise because of a sinful union between Cain and his mother. Cain was already sinful after killing his brother and then being cast out by God. As a result, his offspring were evil and - over thousands of years - slowly became monstrous. This happened because Cain and his offspring were separated from God.

It shouldn't be surprising, however, that Nye fails to address this point. As previous reviewers have already stated, Nye chooses to ignore the Christian basis of the poem. His Beowulf has no relationship with God. In the poem, we know that Beowulf draws strength and inspiration from God, and he thanks God for his successes in battle ("the deadly struggle at the start would have ended, if God had not watched over me") Instead, Nye tells us that "Beowulf's best weapon was himself. He put all his faith in that." Beowulf believed in himself fully and therefore had no need for God - according to Mr. Nye. Let's not forget that this story is really about the battle between good and evil, Beowulf (God) versus Grendel (Satan). The poem tells us that Grendel came from Hell, and that he was an "enemy of God," who "waged war against God." Regarding Beowulf, the poem tells us that "Holy God has sent him to help our people."

If you choose to read this book you will notice that Mr. Nye wisely includes a disclaimer: "This is an interpretation, not a translation." Perhaps this is how he justifies changing the original story to such an extent that the characters are unrecognizable. His book, therefore, is not an interpretation of the original story but an alteration of it. Instead of bringing honor to the poem, he dishonors it.

There's nothing wrong with Mr. Nye writing a story about a humble, unimpressive man who manages to overcome his weaknesses. He just shouldn't have named him Beowulf.

Fun. But wildly dissimilar.

In many ways, this Beowulf is a lot of fun for kids. The writing is direct and clear (although there are plenty of vocabulary stretchers). The action is fun. Beowulf's heroism is unquestionable.

But, I don't understand why one would publish a Beowulf retelling and stay just close enough to the original to be confusing (as opposed to John Gardner's wonderful Grendel, which told the story from the monster's perspective). The most disturbing divergence was making Unferth a petty bad guy in enamored of evil. In doing so, Nye sacrifices much of the nobility of the original.

I don't know if there are other kid-friendly tellings of this story. But, I would look for one of those, first.

Inspirational

Very heart warming and touching. I could not put this book down. If you plan on reading make sure you have a box of tissues near. This book gives life new perspective. The author conveys a very heartfelt account of his very personal life knowing that he has limited time on earth with his very young son. It will change your life as you will find new appreciation for the "little things" in life that really mean the most.

Letters to Bryce

How sad for a Father to know how short his time on earth is but how wonderful for him to pour his heart and soul into letters that that will allow him (Bryce) to get to know him after his Father has passed.

What a great tribute to his son! I had a difference of opinion on several of Shaun's belief's but then again...who am I to judge? This is between him and his son Bryce and Shaun tried to be as honest and forthwright as he could with the time he had left.

I applaud Shaun.
