My Favorite

Spalding Gray's suicide robbed us of our finest raconteur. His monologues were funny as hell, but they were also deep and thought-provoking at the same time. He is missed.

"Monster in a Box" is my favorite of Spalding's monologues- even better than "Swimming to Cambodia", in my opinion. I think with this one he really hit his stride.

Useful overview

I've used this text twice to teach a 2L/3L SALT class. It is a law school textbook, so the lay person wanting to get an understanding of the area might be better served by the "nutshell" series.

It does a good job outlining the basic constitutional parameters around a state jurisdiction's taxing authority. It also does a good job describing the basic types of state tax systems. As with a lot of this type of book, it can be a little theoretical. So, I'd advise instructors to supplement the text with current developments in the field since SALT remains the "Wild West" of tax practice in many ways. My instructor utilized the Pomp and Oldman text when I took the class many years ago, and I liked how that was organized and the case excerpts were done just a smidge better. Apparently the resale value for this one (it may be a little more widely used and is a hardcover) is a little better (at least according to my students).

In a revision, I'd like to see some more discussion of local tax -- the interaction of multiple taxing jurisdictions on a client's effective tax rate can be quite interesting.

Hellerstein is a great book - but get the newest edition

Walter Hellerstein's book is a fantastic, indepth law school text book on State and Local Taxation. I've taught the class since 2002 using this book and I highly recommend it.

HOWEVER - I would caution anyone buying this particular book because it is an older edition. At the time of this review, the 9th edition is has already been in publication for more than a year. Also, after the 8th edition, the book has been substantially re-organized and lots of much newer cases have been added.

Selling a put is easy. The concern is how to stay out of trouble when markets move against you. This is an excellent book because it tells you how to stay out of trouble and what to do if and when you get into a troublesome situation.

Disappointed

I really liked Wolfinger's book, "Rookie's Guide to Options", but this short handbook leaves much to be desired. If you know next to nothing about writing puts the book is ok, but it suffers from the same flaw that many options books share. Very little information on strike price selection, which is the most important factor that determines the trades success. Wolfinger does mention that the further out of the money the strike price, the more likely the put will expire worthless, but he doesn't mention the use of volatility calculators that can help you determine this probability. Google "option probability calculator" for a free probability calculator that every options trader should use.
He also suggests you should look at support levels, but nothing more than a passing mention.

My second complaint is that for an "advanced" options book I would expect more on trade adjustments. He does say that if the trade moves against you your options are to close the trade or roll it, but no mention of another good adjustment strategy...a delta neutral hedge.

If you have read a few options books, most cover the basics of selling puts. This book also just covers the basics, so you can probably skip it.

If you want to see a real trader make real trade adjustments pick up "Generate Thousands" by Samir Elias.

About the Author

Rob Flickenger has been a professional systems administrator for more than 10 years, and all around hacker for as long as he can remember. Rob enjoys spreading the good word of open networks, open standards, and ubiquitous wireless networking. His current professional project is Metrix Communication LLC, which provides wireless hardware and software that embodies the same open source principles he rants about in his books. Rob also works with the U.N. and various international organizations to bring these ideas to places where communications infrastructure is badly needed. He hopes that all of this effort is contributing toward the ultimate goal of infinite bandwidth everywhere for free. He is the author of two other O'Reilly books: Linux Server Hacks and Building Wireless Community Networks (which is in its second edition).

Roger Weeks is a coauthor of Linux Unwired. He has nearly a decade of experience in systems and network administration and has been building Linux systems at home and in the enterprise since 1998. His first computer was an Atari 800, which was promptly taken apart so he could add more memory before he attached the 300bps modem.He is currently the senior network administrator for Mendocino Community Network, a small ISP in coastal northern California. MCN is owned by the local school district, and puts their profits back into the local schools. Prior to that position, he was involved with community wireless (http://www.nocat.net) and an Internet co-op (http://www.wscicc.org) in Sonoma County, CA.

Okay for the beginner Wifi hacker

There are some reasonable tips here about Wifi hacking. However, I know most of them already. The primary tips are the use of software for Wifi hacking. However, they do not go into great depth on all subjects.

There is some other background on other 802.11 protocol information. But I don't consider a background on 802.11 family of protocols a "tip". That's just information. What I want is gems of practical and applicable ideas/methods that you can only learn from long experience.
In that respect this is disappointing.
If you're serious about Wifi hacking get Wi-Foo. If you want a painless and low cost introduction then Wireless Hacks is appropriate.

As all books in the Hacks series, this title contains a number of tips and tricks that you can explore to enhance your experience in the given subject matter. In this case, it's wireless networking. The book seems to cover a very wide range of topics and operating systems, along with a wide array of hack complexity. Rather than concentrate on a single OS like Windows, the authors cover Windows, Mac, *and* Linux on a number of the hacks. In fact, without counting to be sure, it almost seems like Linux is a bit more predominate than the other two. That's probably understandable, as trying to get Linux to work with things like Bluetooth isn't as "out of the box" as it might be with Windows or Macs. You might also find parts of the book not applicable to your situation, like if you don't have Bluetooth on your phone. Of course, if you *do* have Bluetooth, then you've got some new toys to play with. My personal favorite section was the Do-It-Yourself Antennas chapter, as they have some good information in there on how to improve your reception and your broadcast focus. Since my access point is in the basement and my son's computer is two floors up, I could benefit from a homebrew reflector...

Normally I'm willing to recommend a Hacks title with no caveats. In this case, I think a potential reader needs to be a bit cautious. Don't count on nearly all the hacks to be of interest. You'll either be running the wrong OS, or you'll not be very adept with a soldiering iron. Conversely, all it takes is one or two good new tricks to make a book worthwhile. You could well find those gems in here, but you'll have to look a little harder than normal...

Wireless Hacks is one of the best, most succinct books on all things wireless that I have come across. I was expecting the standard "how to set up and secure a wireless access point" fare, and while you do get some of that, you get so much more as well. The authors really do a good job covering everything wireless. From BlueTooth technology, to standard WiFi, to hacking routers, to creating your own antennas, this is a great book for anyone interested in wireless technology.

Like the other "Hacks" books from O'Reilly, this book contains 100 different things you can do to get more out of your wireless devices. The book begins with a good section on BlueTooth technology. If you've got a new cell phone, chances are you have BlueTooth. The authors show you how to do a lot of creative things-from simply connecting your phone to your computer, to showing a slide show of photographs.

The section on 802.11x hacks is so much more than how to secure a network. The authors show you how to detect wireless networks, how to analyze and watch network traffic, and even build your own access point. One of my favorite hacks involves turning a Linksys WRT54G wireless router into a remote control car-all over 802.11b.

In the last section of the book, the authors concentrate on creating effective wireless networks-big or small. Examples are provided for creating a network for a single house, as well as how to create a network for a whole city.

This is a fascinating book, with examples provided for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms. This book is a must have for wireless network enthusiasts.
