About the Author
My name is Afobos, and I'm originally from Greece. My family immigrated to the states in the late 60's and I've lived here since. I've always loved writing and have written quite a few things mostly for my own pleasure, and I just now started looking into publishing my work. I live 30 minutes south of Houston in League City TX with my 3 indoor cats and outside I have possums racoons and lots of squirrels for company. I enjoy kayaking, (Lots of places for that around here. It's known as the Bayou city...) riding sport bikes, the occasional windsurfing, and never ending battle of the bulge and trying to get in shape. I used to be a bodybuilder back in the 80's and it kind of fizzled from there...8) I have worked in a lot of different fields ranging from pizza delivery driver to cook, to teaching English as a foreign language, teaching Greek, Interpeter, selling ladie's shoes, private security, bodyguard, delivery driver, etc.... Something about working for someone else though has never agreed with me. I guess you can't fire yourself, that why I like to work for myself. 8) I speak fluent Greek, a bit of Spanish which I learned from ex wife's family, a little German, and you can catch my accent when I mispronounce words like sheets and sheep.... I'll let you guess what sheet sounds like when I pronounce it...8)

The novel is hard to put down, like M & M's.

A boy is born with the power to move things with his mind, and as he grows, he gets much better at it. He runs away from his dysfunctional family at 15 and uses his abilities to rob a bank and then quietly help people. As an adult, he is invited by three good-hearted individuals to join his powers with theirs and dedicate himself to secretly helping others. I know, the theme is familiar, the x-men form a League of Extraordinary Gentleman, but this is a fun implementation of the theme. I liked how the author intertwined Greek life and food with the character's life to give it more depth/realism. If you liked "Lifter" by Kilian Crawford or "Jumper" by Steven Gould, you'll like this. If you're looking for something deeper and better written, the Kindle edition of "War and Peace" can be downloaded for 99 cents.

Couldn't put the book down

For $2.99, this is a very good deal for few hours of entertainment! The moment I started the first chapter, I keep reading until the end. I'm hoping there will be a sequel soon. Keep up the good work!

About the Author
Malik Ghallab is Director of Research at the Laboratoire d'Analyse et d'Architecture des Systèmes, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, LAAS-CNRS, Toulouse. He was the director of the French national AI program, coordinated the five national research programs in information science, and served as the chair of ASTI, the French technical society in information sciences and technologies. Currently, he is also the director of the French national interdisciplinary program on robotics and artificial entities (Robea).

Dana Nau is a professor at the University of Maryland, and an AAAI Fellow. His research interests include AI planning and searching, and computer-integrated design and manufacturing. He holds appointments in the Department of Computer Science, the Institute for Systems Research, the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He has more than 250 technical publications, and has co-authored computer programs that won the 1997 world championship of computer bridge and one of the top four awards in the 2002 International Planning Competition. Other awards he has received include an NSF graduate fellowship, an NSF Presidential Young Investigator award, an Outstanding Faculty award, and several “best paper” awards.

Paolo Traverso is the Head of Sistemi di Ragionamento Automatico at the Instituto Trentino di Cultura - Instituto per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica, (ITC-IRST). He was the project leader of industrial and experimental projects such as the development of Rail Traffic Management Systems, the design of tools for Automatic Train Protection, the synthesis of industrial controllers, and the development of systems for planning and control in space environment.

Excellent presentation that fills a void

Until this book, possibly the only comprehensive treatment of planning has been a paper collection: Readings in Planning (Morgan Kaufmann Series in Representation and Reasoning). What these authors have done is phenominal - they've marshalled a bibliography of 565 publications into a comprehensive treatment from a common point of view. That makes it much easier to analyze different approaches to planning, as well as to see how various application domains have applied these approaches to solve real problems.

The first 448 pages of the book discusses various planning approaches, from classical state-space planning including recent improvements in the STRIPS model (GraphPlan), to dealing with temporal operations and resource scheduling. They then use the readers understanding of these deterministic approaches to bridge to planning under uncertainty, which is where planning meets the "real world" of imperfect knowledge, observability or even actions having unintended effects. The next roughly 100 pages goes into application domains discussing how space applications, robotics, manufacturing, emergency evacuation and even the game of bridge has used these planning methods to give the reader better intuitions on their own domain.

Finally some minority approaches such as case-based planning and plan related areas such as plan recognition are introduced briefly, leading to tutorial appendices on search (and complexity), first order logic, and model checking.

I have been working on the periphery of planning research for over 25 years, including (currently) directing advanced research in adversarial planning (a topic not addressed by this book, but that's hardly surprising given the novelty of the approach ;-). This is the best overview and reference I've seen to date for this very important area.

Good book, but could be better

The book is good, covers a lot and is very clear.

The downside: there are some small errors and mistakes.For example, the authors define gamma: SxAxE -> 2^S as the transition function, where S is the state space, A is the set of actions, E is the set of events. Later they say that if there are no events to be considered from the outside world, then you could use E={} (empty set) -- Assumption A3, page 10. Although this is intuitively OK, it is mathematically flawed, because the cartesian product of anything with {} is {}.
Planning with MDPs and specially with POMDPs deserves more attention. In particular, the very short commentary on planning with POMDPs mentions that it is not possible to solve big POMDPs. This is not true anymore; there are very good heuristics for POMDP solving currently.
I think more theorems could have been presented and proved, and some advanced sections could be added to each chapter (some authors include a section with a star, for example)
I also don't like the way pseudo-code is presented, but that is a matter of taste.

It would also be nice if the examples in chapter 2 were fully specified. That helps a lot to understand how problems are represented.

On the good side, there are LOTS of examples for each definition, and there are exercises at the end of each chapter (more exercises would be nice, actually). I also like the discussion and historical remarks at the end of chapters.

This is certainly a very good book. Anyone interested in planning ought to have it (and people interested in AI will certainly benefit from it).

Great Introductory Book.

Automated Planning is a good book for those who get started out in the field of search and planning. It's a good overview of the topics that abound within the planning community.

The only downside of the book is its dealing with important topics like planning graphs and markov description process is cursory, and more detail would have been nice.

The future...

Dr. Brian Stableford's book deals with mankind's future after the biological revolution, in which man finds ways to control both his environment and himself. Mankind will become masters of evolution designing animals to generate food and energy while at the same time allowing mankind to live longer, better lives. The book also talks about man/machine hybrids, brains being linked to computers, super-intelligent machines, biological weapons of war and even mind-control.

Where's the headless chicken I was promised?

For its time it was an OK book into what the future might be like ... got some things right but many things wrong. Thank goodness, no headless chickens grown in labs to satisfy the bloodlust of KFC or humans made into fish people complete with gills!... and luckily the environmental disasters predicted here have largely been avoided except for the occasional oil spill or tsunami wrecking nuke plants.

One of the greatest books I have ever reviewed

One of the greatest books I have ever reviewed. As a child, the illustrations on futuristic genetically engineered beings made it one of my favorites. As an adult, I can finally understand all the molecular biology concepts behind the work. It is simply excellent, a book that broadens the mind to new possibilities.

Actually, I've always believed that the conservative cry of liberal bias was maybe just a bit overdone. For all of you who still think that, be sure to read the book - it belongs in the library of every American who understands that a free press is integral and necessary to our way of life. Note the "free" part of free press. While the government isn't filtering your news, the news media is.
The media isn't just failing us, they're sabotaging democracy. If Goldberg has told even just part of the truth, many in the media deserve to be branded as traitors and hounded out of the business - not because they're liberals or have a liberal bias, but because they're liars, and deliberately misleading the American public.
The media has a right to report in any way they like. But they have an obligation to distinguish between fact and editorial comment. They have an obligation to report fact without regard to the political consequences of that fact. If they elect to add editorial comment to their reporting and acknowledge it as editorial comment, well, that's their right as American citizens. But to deliberately, maliciously lie to us about what is happening and what it means is immoral and unethical. To fail to distinguish between news and editorial comment is unethical. To suppress news or deliberately lie about the facts to advance a political agenda is unethical.
If Mr. Goldberg is only partially accurate, the major media in this country is incredibly corrupt. If he's completely accurate, they're irredeemably corrupt. I shudder to think what the consequences are for our society. Our representative democracy only really works with an educated electorate. One wonders whether the media have noticed that they're no different in 2001 than the old Soviet Pravda and Tass were in the bad old days.

Bitter? If so, why not?

I wonder why the author is frequently characterized as "bitter." My impression was that his tone was one of incredulity - he couldn't believe how warped some of his colleagues were, and he conveyed this by repetition and exclamation.
And if you read this book, you won't be able to believe the blatant bias and contempt for conservative America harbored by the media elite, who live in their own dream world where no contrarian viewpoint is to be heard.
More troubling are the accounts of how the news is regularly skewed to fit the media's view of how things *ought* to be - rather than how they really are. For example, how they "handled" pictures of a politically incorrect chain gang (too many Arfican Americans) ... how vital information is left out ... how labels are slapped on conservatives to portray them as fringe radicals.
Bitter? Well, why not? If you were constantly being targeted simply for exposing a bigotry run rampant, and trying to change it for the better, why not? Has it escaped anyone's notice that "The Dan" is quite a bitter person as well, allegedly nursing grudges for ever?
Finally the fatally flawed and damaging reporting on such vital issues as AIDS and discrimination are given a wider exposure. So many sheep get their news from the liberal media, it's no wonder so much hysteria is generated, so much time and money wasted (see virusmyth.org), so much hatred and anger towards conservatives.
For all its flaws - I wish the book were longer - this book is a wake-up call.

I really appreciate a non-ghost written, first hand account of what really happened. While this book lacks the prose of many offerings, this book more than compensates by pulling back the curtain on a power opinion-builder in our society, the evening national news. He never stoops to "prettying reality" and shows us the "people" that shape our national debate. While it may not be intentional, Goldberg shows that national media's liberal bias repeatedly precludes capturing balanced reporting. He also demonstrates how far out of sync the national media is with its audience in "fly-over country". It also shows how story content selection is driven by the need for ratings, an obvious but ugly reality. BTW Goldberg makes it clear that he is not a Republican and had never voted for a Republican Presidential candidate. He simply deplores the slanted reporting he sees and wants to turn a strong light on it. It is comical how reporters, who make a living investigating and criticizing others, have such a thin skin when the tables are turned. I hope I don't seem to merely be enjoying the discomfort of others in this regard, but I feel this was a book that really needed to be written.
My copy of the book arrived from amazon on December 12 and I haven't been able to put it down.

I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
I want to go to this school! Or maybe the main campus. Or maybe both! I hadn't read the first book in this series, so I read this as a standalone. And it can be read like that. But although the story itself is mostly about Savannah and Margaret, Van and Maggie, a lot of the characters, even Maggie, were in the first book. There are allusions to happenings in the first book that definitely make me want to go back and read it too (the whole Ms Lucy and Clarissa story, plus Reed and Amanda, who don't really make an appearance in this second book but enough is said that you know their story is going to be good as well!). Also, the teaser at the end makes me really want to read the next book in the series, so get to writing Ms. Bacio. But back to this book.
I like the idea of this smaller campus for only women. It makes me wish there was such a place way back when I was learning about myself. Van and Maggie meet the first day of class and there's an instant attraction between them. Both are firmly trying to change things in their own lives, and this leads them to be more open to each other than I think they might have been if they'd met more conventionally. The problem with that is they're existing in almost a type of limbo, because both realize this school isn't exactly the real world. And it's when the real world intrudes into their relationship that they're actually tested. It seems like they get through these test rather well; first with Van's father, and then with Maggie's coworkers. It's the third test that messes things up, and we're left wondering if they'll ever even see each other again, much less find their way back to a relationship with each other.
There were two things that I didn't care for in this story. I don't like when my characters get together so fast. It seems that by getting together so quickly, the relationship feels shallow and almost unformed, because they don't really know each other yet. And in this story that translated into a sense of uncertainty if they were going to remain together, because you had the feeling that neither had been tested before, that they didn't know their own boundaries at all, much less the boundaries of the other person. It's hard to believe in a relationship like that, although at the same time, I wanted them together, because they were sweet and hot together. The other thing was that Maggie's reaction the news her brother's phone call brought (unnamed here because you have to have some surprises, but it's that third and final test from above) seemed almost out of character for her. I'd not seen that sort of behavior from her before (maybe in the first book?) but I certainly didn't expect it.
All in all, a good book, enjoyable and entertaining. If you like erotica with a bit of kink, I'd recommend it. I'll certainly be looking for book one and book three, as well as any others after that.

Vollmann calls the book a cartoon, and although he clearly sympathizes with the radicals, they are, after all, only bugs. In addition to an undigested mass of information about power plants, entomology, and hand guns, there is a lot of good writing herebut not nearly enough to fill 600 pages. With better editing this might have been outstanding. As it stands, it is a fascinating flop, but one that readers interested in experimental fiction will want to take a look at. Edward B. Drove Me Buggy (but that's a good thing)!

I loved it. I'm sure I didn't understand all Vollmann wanted me to. The writing style, while difficult, is extraordinary.

I do not have the literary background to do justice to any deep analysis, so I'll just give you a reader's appraisal. The closest comparison I can make is to David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest". The method of writing and the characters reminded me of "IJ" within a very few pages. I feel safe in saying that if you do not care for DFW, you will not care for this book.

We are taken on a journey in an unrecognizable USA (and world). There is a bare bones description of what is happening to people and places other than that necessary for us to follow the characters through their travails. The list of characters at the beginning is of benefit so you can remind yourself of who is on what team.

To put it in a nutshell - I had fun reading this, which is my goal with any book I read.

The first 50 pages took me almost three hours to read. I was worried I made a big mistake in reading this book. And then Vollmann's world captures you. By the end my opinion had changed: this is the best book I've read.

In-depth review: how does this debut novel compare to Vollmann's later work?

When this debut novel appeared in 1988, Pynchon's "V." (world domination, reactionaries vs. revolutionaries, sinister technology) as well as inevitable Burroughs (cut-up, prickly, bugs) inspired critical comparisons. For a writer just over thirty, this represents a promising, if raw, post-modernist epic produced by an Ivy League (via Deep Springs College, which one senses in the remote version of the School of Daniel) grad immersed in computers (Vollmann wrote this while living under his Silicon Valley cubicle, subsisting after hours on candy bars from the vending machine) and avant-garde techniques, pitted through a doomed humanism suspicious of leftist platitudes as well as capitalist slogans, self-help get off your duff and quit your guff vernacular (sent up here often via Dr. Dodger and Mr. White, the forces that conspire to ruin lots of lives and lots of ecology) and corporate blather.

Vollmann sustains the energy in the same manner as most of his works to date which I've been reading. That is, he postpones fulfillment. Big George, the mysterious force that narrates this along with what seems an alter ego (as is common not only in a debut but throughout Vollmann's career, a blurred fictional-factual stand-in who channels and also questions the real-life author's claims to verisimilitude), tells us early on that a key revelation of the Kuzbuite ideology (which generates the opposition to the well-named electrical force in this computer simulation between big and small as the White Power & Light monopoly) will not be revealed for 400 pages. 400 pages in, two-thirds of the way through, this reader felt the pace lag, as still many more adventures in the Arctic, digressions, and side trips awaited. Sure, some of these are wonderful.

Frank canvassing in the rain of the East Bay suburbs for the cause, Bee dumping the lovelorn "other" narrator, a dramatic fight at an Oregon bar and pool joint, the reveries and terror of summer camp, the privileged affinity group at a college much like the author's alma mater Cornell or his father's Dartmouth who tries to overwhelm the system and revels in its inefficiency, Bug's hitchhiking in the Yukon, and the satirical yet still somewhat disturbing attack by the revolutionaries on a family cruising down a Canadian freeway reveal grand vignettes. Some scenes will reoccur in later books set in the frozen North, in investigating terror and violence at home and abroad, and depicting totalitarian WWII-derived entities in charge. Here, allegories to the Great Beetle taking over an ant's nest, the hive mentality of bees, the subversion of those rising up who get caught in the rising down: the themes of decades of formidable works can be seen embedded and embryonic within YBRA.

I admit the insect plot dissuaded me for a long time from reading this, until I learned that "Rising Up and Rising Down" is part of a loose trilogy starting here and shifting, in its power struggles and big. vs. little guy battles, in the 1982-set "An Afghanistan Picture Show" (alluded to in an aside in YBRA). It has its slow spots, but coming to this after a few Vollmann works, I adjusted to its verbal immersion.

As is typical, fewer passages themselves leap out for demonstration of this style, as Vollmann for all his apposite or wry epigrams and arch stances prefers to plunge the reader into the narrative flow and not to isolate any particularly prosy ripple. Still, the sections entitled "Trees" and "Another Anecdote" provide strong evidence for his philosophical bent. The first considers the ''unfair qualities of ecology" (148) and the second dramatizes by a grasshopper in a jar scenario mortality's impact.

Bug similarly stares at the grey poisons over a Silicon Valley vista (nearly thirty years ago; imagine it now). He longs to revolt, to force this all back to forests, and so he takes up arms. Yet this mission totters and will not win the masses over, even if "surely this change in him was necessary, for without wretchedness and degradation of self one will never accomplish anything." (204) After "Operation Hammer Blow" crushes his affinity group, Bug reasons "if all he had for a weapon was goodness and rightness, he felt a strong sense of fear and powerlessness. Everything he learned was making him more like an insect." (301) After one member has his arms broken by the National Guard when abandoned to his fate, and another vanishes when trying to rescue him, "Bug concluded, perhaps not without reason, that bravery alone, like love and openness, was of little value. So his development continued. He was now thinking in a truly revolutionary way." (306) This type of tone can demoralize you in a six-hundred-plus page work. Humor survives, as mockery or self-deprecation. Underneath, loneliness seeps. For Bug's fellow comrade in their polar lair, it's also grim. "When he had broken himself out of his chrysalis Frank would go to the edge of the plateau and pat the snow as if it were his best friend, and then he would squeeze some of it in his hands and throw it over the edge." (532)

The real author, as opposed to his equally garrulous dual narrators who blur here, has stated he could have gone on ten thousand pages with this. I wanted more vim from Milly and more vigor from Susie; Frank and Stephen Mole as their male counterparts in the circa 1986 uprising seem to get more depth, such as it is for caricatures; their foes Parker, Taylor, and Wayne strut around a lot on but then fade into the workings of White and Dodger who use them as pawns, and all these figures start to look like windup toys even more than when the novel began, although this seems intentional. This all reminded me strongly of Pynchon's "Against the Day." I found it eerie how it precedes it by 20 years.

This winds down after one of the revolutionaries fails to break out of a clever take on the prison genre, in fact and in story. He is immured among those British incarcerated from the War of 1812 in the San Francisco Mint building. No less strange than any other episode I suppose, but after his spectacular demise, the energy of the novel seems to deflate. Vollmann's standard scene, here set with a prostitute named Brandi near the Haight, does not gain the drive that his later depictions of this milieu will, and after more sparring between Big George's and Bug's forces, as the outcome has been long predestined, the novel sputters out. Still, the haunting and bitter cuneiform transmission of the final section shows a writer refusing to give in, and even if Bug never gets the sequel the other narrator promises, this novel ushers in quite a determined turn at bat for Vollmann, who soldiers on. (I have been reviewing many of his books recently, and more to come.)

THIS BOOK IS THE BEST BLACK STALLION BOOK EVER!

I am 12 years old and I LOVED this book! There is NO sex in it, unless you consider the breif mating of The Black and The Ghost. I will admit, however, it does have some pretty detailed deaths and horrors. I stayed up late reading this book it was so good! If you like The Black Stallion- read this book! For added effects- read it at night by flashlight.

The Black Stallion's Ghost

Not for the squeamish! There's forbidden sex, a non-Christian diety and violence. And really not for children ages 9-12, as recommended. I know--I've HAD this book since 9 and hated it then. I re-read it a couple nights ago (I am now in my late 20s) and really enjoyed it. Personally, I would rate the book a 7, but useing the entire Blackl Stallion series as a reference, I gave it a 6. The average reader of the Black Stallion series likes their stories to have all the questions clearly answered, have the horses be the most complex characters and have a definate ending--this book does not have those. I have the feeling Walter Farley wrote this book more for himself than for his audience. He tried to write something he was not known for--a creepy Edgar Allen Poe type book, instead of a regular horse story. Also, he wrote The Black Stallion in 1945 and this was published in 1969--I think he EXPECTED his readers to grow up a bit and want to read something different. If you avoided this book as a kid, give it a try now--you'll be surprised. This is one of the most unique books of the series, requireing you to think and use your imagination as well as to have a love for horses

Imagine your horse running away, your only friend. Walter Farley, author of The Black Stallion's Ghost, puts you right next to Alec Ramsey,11, when he takes a different path one day with his horse, The Black. Little did he know, this decision would come back to haunt him.
Alec is an average boy, with the exeption he is one of the youngest horsemen and he and his horse are racers. The Black can run like the wind; together Alec and The Black are unstopable.
When Alec and The Black were riding through an unfamiliar trail, they suddenly heard music. They looked through a nearby bush and saw a man with his horse. When the man saw Alec, he invited him over for lunch. The man called himself Captain.
When they got there, a fierce storm hit forcing Alec to spend the night.
As night came, Alec could not fall asleep. He looked through the window and saw The Black running away. Captain came out of the barn. Alec ran to get his horse, he was too far in the Everglades to find.
Will Alec find his horse? Read to find out. I recomend this book to 10 and up, there is blood and violence. I liked this book because it talks about horses and you always wonder what will happen next.
