Joining the U.S.’ war effort in 1942, Mexican President Manuel Ávila Camacho ordered the dislocation of Japanese Mexican communities and approved the creation of internment camps and zones of confinement. Under this relocation program, a new pro-American nationalism developed in Mexico that scripted Japanese Mexicans as an internal racial enemy. In spite of the broad resistance presented by the communities wherein they were valued members, Japanese Mexicans lost their freedom, property, and lives.

In Uprooting Community, Selfa A. Chew examines the lived experience of Japanese Mexicans in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands during World War II. Studying the collaboration of Latin American nation-states with the U.S. government, Chew illuminates the efforts to detain, deport, and confine Japanese residents and Japanese-descent citizens of Latin American countries during World War II. These narratives challenge the notion that Japanese Mexicans enjoyed the protection of the Mexican government during the war and refute the mistaken idea that Japanese immigrants and their descendants were not subjected to internment in Mexico during this period. Through her research, Chew provides evidence that, despite the principles of racial democracy espoused by the Mexican elite, Japanese Mexicans were in fact victims of racial prejudice bolstered by the political alliances between the United States and Mexico.

The treatment of the ethnic Japanese in Mexico was even harsher than what Japanese immigrants and their children in the United States endured during the war, according to Chew. She argues that the number of persons affected during World War II extended beyond the first-generation Japanese immigrants “handled” by the Mexican government during this period, noting instead that the entire multiethnic social fabric of the borderlands was reconfigured by the absence of Japanese Mexicans.

Grades 4-7--Laurence Yep's Newbery Honor book (HarperCollins, 1975) offers insights into the lives of Chinese-Americans in early 20th century California. The story begins as eight-year-old Moon Shadow Lee journeys across the Pacific to join his proud and clever father at the family-owned laundry in San Francisco. The boy recounts their problems with prejudice, as well as the kindness of uncles and cousins. Father and son must leave the protection of the family to move out of Chinatown, but they find refuge with a generous and friendly landlady. Once they have successfully established a repair business, they turn their attention to making a flying machine. Though it's a modern invention, part of their motivation is the elder's belief in his own previous dragon existence. Yep draws heavily on his own heritage, but also includes figures such as Teddy Roosevelt and the Wright Brothers, and historic events such as the San Francisco Earthquake. The result is a heartwarming story set in a familiar time and place, but told from a new perspective. The quiet intensity of B. D. Wong's narration enriches the text as he creates memorable voices for a large cast of characters. Wafting, ethereal music signals the end of each side of the cassette, and the cover art is attractive. The only problem is the lightweight cardboard package, which is not sturdy enough for heavy circulation. That shouldn't deter libraries from purchasing this fine recording which will provide upper elementary and middle school listeners with lessons in history, and a gentle reminder of the value of a loving family and loyal friends.

I want to get away, I want to fly away

No one melds fact and myth into seamless storylines of historical fiction quite like Lawrence Yep. Like many of his tales, the remarkable, "Dragonwings", reflects on the Chinese experience in America. Says Yep in his author's note, "I have tried to make some of these dry historical facts become living experiences". The result is a book that certain kids will grow attached to and respect. Admittedly, it is not a book for all children, but for what it offers it is an impressive work.

The plot follows Moon Shadow, a boy sent from his native China to live with his father in the Land of the Gold Mountains a.k.a San Francisco in 1903. While there, Moon Shadow learns a great deal about the ways the white settlers (referred to in this text, without exception, as demons) reacted to the Chinese in California. Yep does not play down the characters' difficulties, but Moon Shadow and his father, Windrider, learn the ways in which they may live their lives acceptably. They befriend their white employers, survive the great San Francisco earthquake, and finally Windrider follows his dream of making a flying machine just as the Wright Brothers did. This portion of the book is based on the true story of a Chinese immigrant that on September 22, 1909 flew from the hills of Oakland, California. As Yep points out in his author's note, this book is a historical fantasy and not an actual factual construction. Nonetheless, Windrider's quest is such that you feel just as caught up in the excitement of the moment as he is when at last he is able to test his creation.

What is so impressive about Lawrence Yep's writing is how he accepts that there are no hard and fast rules about the ways in which people act and react. The Chinese are constantly set upon by the white majority, yet there are good Tang people and bad Tang people just as there are good whites and bad whites. The sentence that really drilled this home for me was one referring to a white female friend Moon Shadow and his father made the acquaintance of. Miss Whitlaw befriends our heroes, as well as the patriarch of their company, referred to mostly as "Uncle". The section I love reads, "I won't say that Miss Whitlaw and Uncle became the best of friends, but they came to like each other as much as two such difference people could". To me, this is an eloquent description of how two people from remarkably different backgrounds can become close without ever reaching the closeness that comes from being with someone like yourself.

So here's the real test of this book; Do kids actually like reading it? Published originally in 1975, I remember hearing about this story when I was in elementary school. And, admittedly, I never so much as picked it up. For those kids that do glance through it, or are assigned it in school, what is their reaction? Honestly, I thought the book began rather slowly. Yep is introducing his subject honestly and with tact and feeling, all of which make the beginning a small slog for the average child reader. Those kids that stick with it, however, will find fights, natural disasters, and attempted throat slittings galore. To my mind, Yep's "Child of the Owl" is a lot more kid friendly than the well-written but ultimately measured "Dragonwings". So if I were to give a child I knew a good, if more contemporary, book reflecting the experiences of Chinese-Americans, I'd probably offer them the former. None of this is to say that there aren't children out there that consider "Dragonwings" to be their favorite book ever. I just suspect they are a minority.

In the end, "Dragonwings" has won more awards and garnered more praise than I think Lawrence Yep could have ever hoped for. It is a fine noble creation and well deserves the attention it has received. Whether kids will ever willingly open its pages is open to debate, but it is definitely a fascinating look into the lives of a people that could well have remained unknown but for the superb prose and experienced writing of one of the finest American writers of our day and age.

This is a good book. I like it very much.

Laurence Yep's novel DRAGONWINGS was the book that our teacher assigned to read for ESL studend. Like most of my classmates, at first I did not like this book. I thought both its story and language were so strange. But later on, I felt that the story more and more interesting, the language better and better. This novel is unusual historical novel. It describes the Chinese immigrants' life at the early of this century in San Francisco. It introduces a lot of Chinese culture and tradition to its readers which remind me what experience in my motherland China. On the other hand, it also introduces a lot of American culture from a Chinese child. It is a great reading book for ESL. Especially for Chinese students. All in all, it is worthy to read, even again. I'll suggest my son who is in third grade to read this book.

Dragonwings

This was an excellent book written through the eyes of a Chinese boy who comes to America and lives among white people, adjusting to their ways and making new friends. Laurence Yep does a wonderful job of portraying the world through the eyes of and immigrant in a new place. He shows the hardships as well as the good times. After reading this book I looked at life a little bit differently. Moonshadow and his dad shared the same dream of flying. And Windrider his father is being tested in this life to become a dragon in the next and by flying he might be able to accomplish this. Windrider shares wonderful dreams woth Moonshadow about being a dragon. The story is filled with love, trust and dishonesty. This is a book I would reccommend to anyone. This book helped me in my personal life as well. Now i know what it's like to be in a new place, and I will help people in a similar situation out and not make fun of them becausce I know I wouldn't want to be treated that way myself.

This book changed my life.

Seriously it has changed my life. I have saved about $3000 in car repair and maintenance costs since I got this book. I have learned a ton about cars in the process and I have also learned much about proper safety when working on cars. You may be surprised, like I was, to find that you father who fixed everything in his car, broke many basic safety rules. I went from being barely able to change my oil, to replacing the air-intake-manifold gasket on my car (a $600 procedure).

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, my new-found knowledge has helped my identify the car repair shops that scamming people for their money. I have seen (caught) mechanics recommend $2700 dollar procedures when only a single wire need to be replaced. I am a young nerdy looking college kid, so any mechanic immediately assumes I know nothing about cars. This assumption used to be correct, but not anymore. I barely take my car to a mechanic anymore and when I do I know I'm not getting screwed. That is a great feeling.

Reasonably good repair manual

This is a useful book to have around the house especially if you can find one at a reasonable price. I found information on most things I have wanted to repair on my car. The chapters are divided up by car systems (electrical, emission control, etc.) There is an index to help locate pages for many things. If something is missing in the index you can generally find it by going to the beginning of an seemingly appropriate chapter and scanning the chapter contents for the topic you are looking for.

The procedures tend to be a bit concise with occasional flipping of pages needed to complete steps that have already been covered in a different procedure. Also I have often found that the photos leave me scratching my head wondering where the part actually is. Sometimes a photo was referenced that didn't exist. For most repairs I need to look on line for more thorough instructions, but then the book is handy to have out at the car to refer to while I am working on it.

Worth the price

Gently used and well worth the low price.

However....

I bought it to help replace my hand brake cable. I wanted to know if I had to pull up the carpet in the back of the car to guide the cable to the brake handle, like you have to in the newer Saturn Ion. I wanted to avoid a job that involved that. This book illustrated the cable replacement but didn't mention pulling up the carpet. So, I did the job, and found I had to pull up the carpet. There was no information on doing that in this book that I could see. So, I used U-Tube to see how this was done. Pulling up the carpet was actually pretty easy, but, it would have been nice if the book had illustrated this.

And, it would have been nice if the book had discussed the several clamps and the grommet needed for this job.

But, I got the cable job done, and this book helped, so yeah me.

About the Author
A loving mother, a successful entrepreneur, a survivor – Lenuta Hellen Nadolu, or just ‘Hellen’ as she is known to many – is the epitome of a self-made woman. Born and raised in 1950s communist Eastern Europe, she struggled to find her place in an unhappy family and in an oppressive patriarchal society where a woman’s life had little value. Growing up in Romania and Bucharest, Hellen knew great hardships but always remained hopeful of gaining an education and finding her place in the world. In an effort to escape to a better life, Hellen married a successful doctor, suffering further prejudice and scorn for marrying outside her race and culture. She moved with him to Ghana. But Hellen’s hopes for a happier life were crushed when she realised that her husband’s world was equally oppressive and dangerous. Now trapped in Africa with three small children, Hellen knew she would need to take drastic steps to protect herself and her family from emotional and psychological abuse from her husband and his domineering family. The first European woman to ever be granted a petition of divorce in Ghana, Hellen took her children and fled back to Romania. She then summoned all her faith and resilience and immigrated to Australia in 1984; finally achieving a happy life for her children and herself. Today Hellen lives in Sydney, Australia, where she runs a successful cosmetology business, surrounded by her beloved children Elsie, William and Nancy and grandchildren Amira and Leila. Hellen’s memoir, Give Me Courage, chronicles her life journey; her refusal to give up on herself and her dreams; her refusal to be a victim of cultural terror; her refusal to be treated as a lesser human being in a male-dominated society. She hopes to inspire women, and all those who are subjected to racial, cultural and religious discrimination, to persevere and to nurture their spirit so that they can live their lives with grace and gratitude. In addition to her writing, Hellen frequently speaks to groups about her experiences and the lessons she has learned. Most recently, she was a guest speaker at a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees charitable event in support of women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

've been meditating for twelve years and find these the best CDs I've ever used.
Whether for long time meditators or beginners they offer a clear, simple, step by step guide to open hearted awareness .
I wish I'd had them when I started.

Release Into Freedom

The gift of these meditations by Loch Kelly is that they open us to directly experience those dimensions which other teachers predominantly talk "about" or describe. These meditations, better called, pointing out instructions assist us to recognize Ever Present Awareness, to awaken to it and to awaken As That. They enable us to open into a boundless, alive, already loving, spaciousness which includes thoughts, feelings, emotions, body, and our everyday world. This is non-duality made tangible to anyone seeking freedom and a release from a life of contraction.

"Rest as the black velvet silence that is deeper than sleep and yet wide awake," Loch Kelly says in one of the Glimpse exercises. He talks about unhooking local awareness from thought and allowing awareness to expand and mingle with infinite space. I believe he has taken Tibetan and other meditation practices and made them accessible through these guided Glimpses. I've never been one for long sitting periods of meditation, and I find these shorter Glimpse practices to be mind-opening and transformative. I bought a few copies as I listen to them during my break at work, and then also at home. I haven't met Loch Kelly or attended any of his workshops, and I am happily astonished to discover these guided Glimpses. I frequently hit "pause" when listening and allow awareness to shift into freedom. Kelly's pointing to that which is here yet unnoticed is exceptionally incisive, simple, and accessible. Kelly asks, "What is here when there is no problem to solve?" In the pause after this question, consciousness relaxes and expands out of the tight whirlpool of relentless problem-solving. I've spent several hours listening to the CDs, and the more I listen to them, the more doors open within. Highly recommended.
