About the Author
Author and illustrator M. Sasek (1916–1980) was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He is best remembered for his classic stories on the great cities of the world.

A Nostalgic Trip through England

Part of a larger collection, "This is Britain" is a nostalgic trip through the towns, cities, and places of the United Kingdom. Similar to Miroslav Sasek's other works, such as "This is Paris" and "This is Rome," "This is Britain" focuses on the sights of Britain, starting with the Tower of London, traveling to Windsor Castle, visiting Oxford University and Cambridge University (one must be fair when comparing the two), and famous cathedrals in the cities of Canterbury, York, and Hereford.
Each page also includes details about Sasek's classic illustrations. For example, when you visit Hereford, not only do you see a picture of the cathedral, you also learn that there has been a church in Hereford since 825 BCE, and that in 1802, a man auctioned his wife for £1 and a bowl of punch in the marketplace!
My wife and I love this classic children's book. We both studied in England as undergraduates, and while some facts may be outdated, the recent publication includes corrections in the back of the book. We look forward to reading this to our children, and the original illustrations from 1974 bring back nostalgia about the beauty of the United Kingdom. If you are a fan of Sasek's works, enjoy children's literature, or an Anglophile (or all three), this is the book for you.

one of my favorite entries into the sasek series!

sasek's books are all visually lovely, no doubt about it, however they are also incredibly informative, which i quite appreciate. this book is littered with amazing images and interesting facts.
on a totally unrelated note, the book smells good too, just like the library books of yore.
and as with all the updated printings of sasek's books, there is a welcome list of "this is the country...today!" at the end of the book with changes listed since the original printing. it is great to see both the way the country WAS as well as the present day differences.
i highly recommend this book if you are interested in either britain, or simply in wonderful illustration.

Wonderful illustrations in this updated classic

Very comprehensive for a children's book. Wonderful illustrations as always. Update is appreciated. Bought for our grandson so he can see where his parents traveled on their vacation when he was very young. Humorous too.
