Wake up world!

This is John Martinkus' attempt at awakening the sleeping world that has largely ignored the undeniable brutality and genocide committed by the Indonesian military. The book is essentially a factual report of the situation in Aceh from the late 1990s up to 2003: the events leading up to the "peace" treaty, life under the treaty and the devastating response that followed. John narrates very matter of factly, as he presents background and details his work on the ground reporting from Aceh. I found this refreshing as he is deliberately avoiding media journalism.

John's thesis is that:

- the Indonesian military has used various tactics to intimidate Aceh locals and reporters from speaking out about the atrocities

- it has successfully manipulated international public opinion to support what is essentially mass murder of civilians by blaming GAM (the separatist movement)

- world leaders have gone out of their way to ignore, play down or perpetuate misinformation about the conflict

- the tactics were the same that were used in East Timor, and they are being carried out by the same people responsible for East Timor, people who the international community has not brought to justice.

This is an intelligent, informative, non-melodramatic insight into a catastrophe happening under our noses.

The author does an excellent job in presenting insight and detailed information regarding the situation in Aceh. He is able to combine his first-hand experiences with research, and presents it in a manner which all can understand. This would be a great book to use with high school and college students as well as the general public so as to open the eyes of people as to the real story of the Acehnese struggle.

About the Author
Neil "The Ground Marshal" Melanson is one of the most sought after ground fighting coaches in the world, due to his intense and relentless grappling style and paramount fighting techniques. As a Hayastan Grappler, Neil trained under "Judo" Gene LeBell, Gokor Chivichyan, and received his black belt from Karo "The Heat" Parisyan.
At Hayastan, Neil learned this hybrid art of grappling that focuses on the use of neck and leg locks. Neil is well known as a master of the guard and has developed many different guard systems such as K-control, shoulder pin series, Irish collar, and others. Not only do guard players seek Neil out to learn and master the guard, but top game players do as well. Neil has made a name for himself as the man to see to learn how to beat the guard. He teaches an MMA style of grappling that focuses on protecting the head from strikes along with the practical application of the turtle in MMA.
Neil has trained champion fighters such as Randy Couture, Gray Maynard, Frank Trigg, Vitor Belfort, Michael Chandler, Chael Sonnen, and others, to become a legend in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.
Much of Neil's time is spent at Xtreme Couture MMA in Las Vegas, Nevada, but he also travels throughout the country to teach seminars.

Marshal D. Carper grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania running from bullies and playing video games. Now, much to the surprise of his family, his former bullies, and himself, he trains Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Pedro Sauer black belt Sonny Achille and writes about fighting. Triangle Heaven

This book is not about a single submission, it is about a system. Neil distills years of grappling knowledge into an incredibly easy-to-read manual that discusses the intricacies of one of the most effective moves for grappling and MMA--the triangle choke.

Mastering Triangles provides an eye-opening insight into how to identify, set-up, and execute triangle chokes. Instead of forcing the submission, Neil explains how your opponent's body position will dictate which of his triangle systems will be most effective to apply and finish triangles. This type of systemic knowledge gives you incredible confidence on the mat because no matter what your opponent does you will have a vicious answer.

Equally important, the book contains multiple angles of each step on a given submission or position--making it simple to understand and use. Neil Melanson is the best grappler I have rolled with and his triangle game is crazy. But there is a method to his ridiculously-effective grappling madness. There's a wealth of knowledge here. This book is huge! Who ever knew there were this many triangle setups? I really like how the book is broken down into your opponents body position. The book shows a very systematic way of setting up your triangles. If you're looking to take your triangles (and grappling game in general) to the next level, definitely check this book out!

Complete shift in your perception of the Guard and Triangle

For a lot of grapplers and MMA practitioners it can not be understated what a profound effect this book will have upon your approach to fighting off your back. I trained under few different grappling coaches before training Neil's system, and thought I understood the guard and the triangle, I was wrong.Neil has a formulaic approach to grappling that leaves nothing to error. In every position, Neil has a firm grasp of what the opponent can do and is ready to capitalize on their actions. When used correctly your opponent is nothing more than a fly caught in a spider's web. Neil Melanson does everything, but slap the triangle on your opponent himself. Also go to youtube if your on the fence, Neil has uploaded some of the techniques from his book in HD.

Disappointing- no real information about Reiki in the book. Was at least 50% more expensive and 50% smaller than most 'coloring books for grownups', and was just a bunch of random 'mandala like' images that are available for free from a Google search, with no educational information about the given topic with the images. Had the look/feel of a self-published volume pulled together with a nice cover. Would give it a higher rating if: 1) book had been larger, 2) less expensive, 3) had some educational content pertaining to subject matter. Disappointing- was returned on receipt.

Every health professional needs to read this book.
The WHO recognised Myalgic Encephalomyelitis as a neurological disease in 1964, yet the majority of practitioners in the UK refer to it as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and are more comfortable treating each symptom in isolation.

Byron Hyde makes the case for the holistic treatment of what is a devastating, and in some cases life-threatening, illness.

Read this book if you or anyone you know has ME, or if you are a medical professional. Give a copy to your doctor. The more educated we are about ME the fewer patients will be left to deal with the disabilities it causes and the stigma attached to this invisible disease because of the inaccurate nomenclature.

Essential reading on M.E. and on the misdiagnosis of 'CFS'

This book is essential reading for doctors and patients alike, and those interested in M.E. as well as those interested in 'CFS' or that have been misdiagnosed as 'CFS.'

(As this book explains, there is no such distinct disease as 'CFS' - and every diagnosis of 'CFS' is a MISdiagnosis. This book also explains that M.E. is not a similar disease to 'CFS' nor a mere 'fatiguing disorder.')

The Nightingale Definition of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis paper in particular cannot be recommended highly enough.

Finally this is a modern and TESTABLE definition of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, created by the world's leading and most experienced M.E. expert, Dr Byron Hyde. This is NOT a redefinition of CFS but is instead a pure M.E. definition.

It draws on the long history of M.E., collates the evidence from each of the world's leading M.E. experts (past and present) and combines this with details of the most modern medical tests. This definition also rightly gives no importance at all to the bogus notion of mere `fatigue' having any importance in the diagnosis/definition - unlike each of the `CFS' definitions, including unfortunately the Canadian `ME/CFS' definition which just mixes in a few M.E. facts with what is still primarily a `CFS' redefinition.

Dr Hyde explains that:

"I believe it essential to define clearly Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, returning the definition to its clinical and historic roots and complementing this information with the certitude of modern scientific testing. That is what the Nightingale definition of M.E. sets out to do. But let me first ask you a very important question.

What is the purpose of any medical definition? What is the purpose of any disease definition if it is not to allow the physician to rapidly and accurately diagnose a specific illness in order to attempt to effectively treat the patient before the illness becomes chronic or to call in the appropriate specialists? Our definition solves this problem."

"There is a third purpose for any disease definition. That is to clearly define the disease so that various physicians and researchers can clearly understand that they are talking about the same illness spectrum and so launch research into what will become an effective treatment. Our definition gives a clear baseline for investigation.

The Nightingale definition is based upon the following two criteria: (a) The excellent scientific and clinical work of respected physicians and scientists who investigated the various M.E. epidemics. (b) The results of modern scientific testing techniques and the knowledge accruing from examining thousands of M.E. patients using these and more historical techniques. The proposed M.E. definition is designed to improve early diagnosis and treatment for the tens of thousands of patients stricken with M.E. It is not a new definition of CFS nor should it be conceived as a rewording of any previous CFS definition.

The definition is set out in such a fashion as to enable the physician to make a bedside or office clinical diagnosis and then to scientifically test the hypothesis. This will allow the physician an early diagnostic understanding of this complex illness and a scientific and technological method to investigate and confirm the diagnosis. It is well known by all serious physicians that in order to assist any patient in a partial or full recovery the illness must be (a) prevented from occurring by either immunization or understanding and avoiding the causes, (b) or diagnosed and treated immediately following onset. The Nightingale Definition assists the physician both in diagnosis and early treatment.

What follows is the primary M.E. definition for adults. I believe it essential to define clearly Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. That is what the Nightingale definition of M.E. sets out to do........

To various degrees many if not all of the above historic findings have been observed and discussed by Doctors Alexander Gilliam, Bjorn Sigurdsson, Alberto Marinacci, Andrew Lachlan Wallis, A Melvin Ramsay (Elizabeth Dowsett), John Richardson, Elizabeth Bell, Alexis Shelokov, David C Poskanzer, W.H. Lyle, Sir E. Donald Acheson, Louis Leon-Sotomayor, J. Gordon Parish and many others."

'The Complexities of Diagnosis' is also very, very good overall and is also recommended. (This piece does unfortunately use the misleading and confusing term 'ME/CFS' throughout, but the content of the paper makes it crystal clear that M.E. and 'CFS' are not at all the same.)

A little known gem

Dr Byron Hyde is one of the foremost ME specialists in the world. He explains in detail the difference between ME and CFS. If only we had many more Dr Hydes around the world, many patients would not be suffering needlessly with undiagnosed ME, where they are often met with scepticism and ridicule even when they do have a diagnosis due to the lack of medical and general understanding. His work needs shouting out around the world, particularly in the medical profession, where his work should be compulsory reading during all medical doctor training programmes.

Joining the U.S.’ war effort in 1942, Mexican President Manuel Ávila Camacho ordered the dislocation of Japanese Mexican communities and approved the creation of internment camps and zones of confinement. Under this relocation program, a new pro-American nationalism developed in Mexico that scripted Japanese Mexicans as an internal racial enemy. In spite of the broad resistance presented by the communities wherein they were valued members, Japanese Mexicans lost their freedom, property, and lives.

In Uprooting Community, Selfa A. Chew examines the lived experience of Japanese Mexicans in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands during World War II. Studying the collaboration of Latin American nation-states with the U.S. government, Chew illuminates the efforts to detain, deport, and confine Japanese residents and Japanese-descent citizens of Latin American countries during World War II. These narratives challenge the notion that Japanese Mexicans enjoyed the protection of the Mexican government during the war and refute the mistaken idea that Japanese immigrants and their descendants were not subjected to internment in Mexico during this period. Through her research, Chew provides evidence that, despite the principles of racial democracy espoused by the Mexican elite, Japanese Mexicans were in fact victims of racial prejudice bolstered by the political alliances between the United States and Mexico.

The treatment of the ethnic Japanese in Mexico was even harsher than what Japanese immigrants and their children in the United States endured during the war, according to Chew. She argues that the number of persons affected during World War II extended beyond the first-generation Japanese immigrants “handled” by the Mexican government during this period, noting instead that the entire multiethnic social fabric of the borderlands was reconfigured by the absence of Japanese Mexicans.
