The author of this book makes an interesting point - you can become as much a vegetarian as you want ( you can be part veg) and also you can re build your diet so that weight loss will occur as a natural result of eating the right way. A very fresh perspective, worth reading even if you stay a meat eater!

I downloaded this book because my daughter is interested in becoming a vegetarian and I want to make sure she does it in a healthy way. There is a lot of great info in this book along with some delicious-sounding recipes. We can't wait to try the Asian salad. Thanks!

Not an actual weight loss plan..but great for Vegetarian Newbies!

I'm giving this 5-stars because it's great advice for those wanting to become or new to Vegetariansim. However, I don't see it as a weight-loss book. Myself, like countless others I'm sure, went Vegetarian and in times of waiting too long to eat, ended up eating big delicious bowls of pasta instead of taking the time to have meals planned for moments like that. Thus, I've put on a few pounds and I was hoping this book would be an actual 'diet' to assist in weight-loss and have some type of plan laid out, which it doesn't. That disappointed me..but because the advice is good...she gets the 5-stars ;)

About the Author
Dwight H. Perkins is the H. H. Burbank Professor of Political Economy Emeritus at Harvard University and former director of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Professor Perkins is a leading scholar on the economies of East and Southeast Asia. Professor Perkins’s legacy is contained not only in the many chapters he has contributed to Economics of Development and in his many scholarly books and articles, but also in the thousands of students he has taught over his distinguished academic career (including all of his current coauthors!).

Steven Radelet joined Economics of Development for its fifth edition. At the time he was a fellow at Harvard’s Institute for International Development and taught in both Harvard’s economics department and the Kennedy School of Government. He subsequently was deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia; a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development; and Senior Advisor on Development for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is an expert on foreign aid, developing country debt and financial crises, and economic growth, and he has extensive experience in West Africa and Southeast Asia. He currently serves as Chief Economist for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

David L. Lindauer is the Stanford Calderwood Professor of Economics at Wellesley College, where he has taught since 1981. He has frequently served as a consultant to the World Bank and was a faculty associate of the Harvard Institute for International Development. Professor Lindauer’s area of expertise is in labor economics. His research and policy advising has included work on industrial relations, labor costs and export potential, minimum wages, poverty and unemployment, public sector pay and employment, and racial affirmative action. He has worked on labor market issues in East and Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and elsewhere. Professor Lindauer, an award-winning teacher of economics, brings his considerable experience teaching undergraduates to this edition.

Steven A. Block is Professor of International Economics and head of the International Development Program at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He joins Economics of Development beginning with the seventh edition and has been teaching development economics at the Fletcher School since 1995. Professor Block also holds a faculty appointment at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, and has been a visiting scholar at the Harvard University Center for International Development and at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. He has published numerous scholarly articles in the areas of agricultural development and political economy, and worked extensively on policy advisory teams across Sub-Saharan Africa and in Southeast Asia.

A bit about the man: Dr. Niku is an old-school professor who was involved in the early days of robotics. He is not one to stay up with the times and taught the whole class from an overhead projector. (I know, right?) At times, the material seemed a bit outdated. For example, we were told that in practice, the position calculations are performed by the circuitry and cannot be corrected for the end-effector used, which I find hard to believe because the company I work for recently installed a 5 axis robotic welding center with a custom end torch and we are able to program it with the torch tip as the end. He is a good professor, who I enjoyed but I wonder if my class was a bit more of a history of robotics than a course in practical robotics.

The book is a bit hard to understand at times and sometimes is unclear. Again, it helped me because I could ask the man who wrote it. Don't expect to be able to teach yourself from the book, but I will probably be keeping it for reference.

A nice thing about it is that is relatively small and lightweight, so that's good.

Pass on this book if you aren't an engineering student

I used this text as a Computer Science grad student, and it was worthless. I'm reasonably skilled in linear algebra, but the examples and explanations in this book just seemed like nonsense. I had to spend a ton of time on khan academy, the course site from a UCLA professor, and with a tutor, just to do the problems in this book. Even the masters students in math said they couldn't make sense of this garbage book.

More than acceptable

After taking the ASE Engine Performance ASE test, I failed it by four questions. I will have to retake it in a few months. Nevertheless this book gives you a great addition of knowledge to add on preexisting knowledge. If you are planning on getting this book without any prior understanding of Engine Performance and just passing the test, forget it.

The fact is that most of these questions will not be on the ASE test. There are 300 practice questions in the book. A lot of them are good for info. And some of them are not even worth looking at. Common sense questions that you will never see on the test such as " what is the first step in the diagnosis process ". Knowledge such as this is basic and there are a few questions like this in the book. But trust me, they will not be on the actual test.

There are a few areas it falls short at. But again with such a large amount of questions and explanations, you learn quite a bit. So I would not give it a bad rating. One area it falls short in is scan tool diagnosis. Such as live data diagnosis. Even though I was already prepared for these kinds of questions, it was not thanks to this book(I studied various online practice and study test). In this book there are few scan tool diagnostic questions that involve interpreting live data. But on the test, you are bound to see at least 4 or 5 questions about interpreting live data.

Another area it fell short in to me was Emission controls. There was not enough thorough symptom and diagnostic info on the EVAP system or questions. I was seeing questions such as " a customer complains they cannot fill the gas tank pass half full ". There is no info on this kind of symptom in the book. Of course I dont know if that counted towards my score, but there were two similar questions like this one. So I feel it should have been covered.

The Engine Performance ASE test has a lot of diagram questions. So I also feel that there should have been more of those in the book instead of putting those simple ones. Electrical diagnosis is one of my weak points. And there are a few questions on this, but I feel there should have been more. Last but not least there are some disputable questions and a couple of small errors. Im not going to go over the small errors I found.

Regardless of the cons, for the money it's well worth it to increase knowledge and understanding of this subject. I would definitely recommend it to anyone planning to take the ASE test. And I will buy the other versions as well. In fact I bought the Engine Repair version and I passed that test. But of course Engine Performance is a bit more advanced.

I did like how many practice exams this book had and how ...

I have done a tremendous amount of studying and this book doesn't go in enough detail in my opinion. It goes over the basics but doesn't go into depth on scope testing and other tests you need to know. In order to pass the ASE test you need to know The different wave form readings on ignition systems in kilovolts, normal spark lines etc. I did like how many practice exams this book had and how it gave you a starting point for learning tune up and engine performance. How I finally passed was understanding Fuel trims, (vacuum testing such as what vacuum readings should be at Idle, when exhaust is restricted, burnt valve, bad timing etc. I suggest you read sections of this book and then go on google and youtube and search for more information so you fully understand every aspect of ignitions systems, fuel diagnosis(whats causes rich and lean problems. Also get familiar with Pvc, evap, and egr , overadvanced timing and retarded timing causes and symptoms.

Great for ASE prep

Ordered these to get a little in depth coverage of this particular ASE test. I am pleased with the coverage of material and the presentation.

The only draw back to these would be if you aren't already very familiar with the work, and if you are a "grammar nazi" because there a few typo's and it may sound silly, but they distract me the first read through. Not a big deal, just saying.
