Great Book

Out of any guitar teaching books I own, this one is my favorite. It is a larger type book with big plastic loop bindings. This makes open placement much easier. The music scales or graphics are very easy to read and the book is presented in a logical manner. This book also comes with 3 CD's which are named Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3. Very easy to use and follow. 5 stars.

After doing some reaserch on good guitar books I found this one and bought it. I've been playing the guitar on and off for about 6 years but never really took the time to learn the craft and the instrument I just looked for the tab of my favorite songs and played that. But now after years of frustration and not really knowing how to play I've decided to buy a couple of books (this one, music theory for guitarist and fretboard mastery) and start really learning how to play the guitar. Even tho as a beginner I took some lessons with 3 different teachers, this book has taught me more than all of them combined. This book is awsome for any guitarist looking to learn the fundamentals and basics. I belive it's very important to have a good base of knowledge as a musician to be able to acomplish anything you want in music. This book gives you that and more!

It may not be for everyone but it is for me

After spending a good amount of money on one-on-one guitar lesson with professional guitarists, I've gotten nowhere. It's none of any of my former teachers' fault. It's just being 47 years old with a full-time job and and another full-time job raising a family with 3 young kids leave me with little time and energy for little else for myself, and that made it more challenging to learn how to play a musical instrument. I recently got this book and its CD's, after helping my oldest daughter with her viola practices using a CD to accompany her playing along with a book. All I can say is that it was at $15 well-spent. One thing I must say though - if you don't want to practice, then no matter how much you spend, it ain't gonna help you learn or play better. The accompaniments on the CD's will make you sound better than you can really play, and that will motivate you to practice even more. Honestly, it does make me want to "grab my guitar and play it all night long."

This book enlightens the reader on many important historical points and yet the story has yet to be fully told. Barbadian society is immensely complex due to the extreme situations so many generations have endured. Subsequent publications that examine the nature of detrimental social and psychological effects which persist in Barbados right through to the present day would be most welcome.

About the Author
J. Peter Burkholder is Distinguished Professor of Musicology at Indiana University. He has written and edited four books on Charles Ives, as well as numerous articles on topics spanning from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century for The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Journal of the American Musicological Society, Journal of Musicology, Musical Quarterly, 19th-Century Music, Music Theory Spectrum, and other journals. He has served as President, Vice President, and Director-at-Large of the American Musicological Society and on the board of the College Music Society. His writings have received awards from the American Musicological Society, the Society for American Music, and ASCAP.

Donald Jay Grout, late professor of music at Cornell University, also wrote a standard history of opera.

Claude V. Palisca, late professor of music at Yale University, began his collaboration on A History of Western Music with the Third Edition. Among his many publications are a history of Baroque music and a collection of scholarly essays on Italian Renaissance music.

good but a little uneven and confusing

i'm just a neuropsychologist who is interested in music - very interested, but not a formal student or teacher. I've studied clarinet, piano, recorder in some detail... I got this for an overview and general grounding, and also in the hopes of being able to obtain a good deal of detail when i wanted it. for the most part it does both, but, as to the latter - depth/detail - some things are covered in great detail and others in what i would call a cursory manner, with a couple sentences. In some cases, i myself know there is much more easily available, just from my lifetime of perusing liner notes, watching PBS or listening to NPR, the occasional book, and other ways of learning about music. Of course, the editors/writers had to pick and choose, but i just think some areas are under-represented; the book is already big so there would be little downside to it being even half again bigger. Maybe i just hoped for more because i already knew what was in there. My background is admittedly uneven.

My major complaint, however, which probably should prompt even more "points" knocked off the rating, is that there are accompanying materials - the written/graphic "anthology" and the "recorded" anthology, both of which i would like to get, but they are expensive and it is VERY (!!!!) difficult to determine exactly which of each of these really goes with the 8th edition i got. Everything seems to have different editions, and there are the "lite" version (something like 6 cds) and the "complete" version (like 15 cds or something), i think of both. the reason to be sure is that in the margin there are (very helpful) indications where in the written/graphic and in the recorded anthology you can find the score (written/graphic) or music (recorded) materials that are being discussed. If you pick a certain instance of this, then try to go where you might order the written or recorded anthology - guess what! - you do not immediately find anything that looks right. Not to mention that i believe on the Norton site the current edition of the history itself is - or was last month - the 7th edition. I just don't see the reason for all this chaos and confusion. Once they get it figured out and clear, i will be buying, because it is good material, but this is almost like dealing with Microsoft! Why not say, 8th edition history goes with 5th edition "lite" cds, or something - in a chart?

If someone actually has found out what to buy, or somehow bought the right thing by chance, you are probably giving this 5 stars (because i'm sure it's great), and probably you think i am nuts. If so, how about tipping me off - what are the specifics (name and edition#) for the complete written and recorded anthologies that go with the book, 8th edition?

Great Reference!

Before I say anything else, you should know that the everyday price for this 6th edition hardcover book is much less at your local bookstore (not at liberty to state where). Why on earth does Amazon charge so much!?
I was delighted to hear that Palisca had released yet another edition of this fine reference on the history of Western art music. I present pre-concert lectures & talks for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ravinia Festival and other local orchestras and I find this reference to be a good starting point for refreshing my knowledge of the historical context behind a piece of music I've been asked to talk about. The writing gets clearer and easier to read with every new edition. I found the 6th edition a very easy read, engrossing and wonderfully thorough given the scope of what it sets out to achieve.
Since I want this reference to assist me with historical context, I found that it does a terrific job up to the late 19th century, and is somewhat lacking from then on. The reference treats the late 19th and 20th century on a composer-by-composer basis and doesn't link the overall trends very well. For instance I couldn't find much on why Shostakovich and Prokovief composed as they did, whereas composers of the 18th and 19th centuries are placed in larger trends and movements rather easily. I understand that it takes time and dedicated scholars to reveal the many layers that make up an era and its art, so I am forgiving if still a little frustrated.
I was impressed that Palisca set out to have each and every section & composer reviewed by scholars in their respective fields of expertise. For instance, I had read a recently published and excellent book that set out to challenge the generally accepted view on Haydn and his place in history as a composer of symphonies, and that author is referenced as a source for the section on Haydn in this 6th edition. Palisca's desire to be thorough and to reflect the lastest research and thought on composers and their eras makes this 6th edition an even more valuable resource for my personal library.
I also found the revised glossary to be outstanding and incredibly helpful!

The 6th edition still sets the standard !

I remember the First edition of Grout's "A History of Western Music"--it was the main text in use when I was a first year undergraduate student. In fact it was one of the standard texts in use at a large number of colleges. The good news is that I was pleased to see the excellent changes. I didn't have to look far to find my first (1 st) edition Grout ( I've used it still until I purchased this new 6th edition several weeks ago)--there are 101 more pages of text. In reality there is much more to look at as the 1st edition book was only 6 x 9 inches. The new 6th Edition is larger: 7 1/4 by 10 1/2 inches. In addition, there is a highly attractive layout; the best feature? A wonderful highlighted-in-blue area (appearing every 40 pages or so) in which the composers themselves speak about a wonderful range of topics such as Francois Couperin 'On the Union of the Italian and French Styles' or, the great J.S. Bach's description of one the church service's he organized (known as an 'Order of Service') taken from a collection of his memoirs.
Lastly, I enjoyed seeing the addition of an overall "Time-Line of Events" which prefaces each unit. This includes not only items from music, but any historical event which remotely affected change in music or musical thought.
My singluar critical note is perhaps something which the authors had little time to devote to. The 6th edition ends with composers who, in this reviewer's opinion, were certainly not 'mainstream'--like John Cage (1912-1992) (who's infamous "4'33" is actually a period of four minutes and thirythree seconds in which the 'performer' remains totally silent). Cage was popular in the late 70s more for his extremism than anything else. The last paragraph of the book does state, in effect, that composers are being more sensitive to their audiences. (No doubt! Their INsensitivity nearly killed classical music in the 70s) As with any textbook, deadlines must limit speculation--there will undoubtedly be a 7th edition to address more changes in our musical world.
Lastly, the reader should take note that the current author of this work, Claude V. Palisca, is also the author of the "Norton Anthology of Music" which can be used in conjunction with this text. Also, the publisher, W.W.Norton and Co., has a website for readers (which is also mentioned in the text: [...] The website is still active (I just visited it) and has a wealth of information and listening resources---too bad we didn't have this back in 1967 !

Excellent casual referance

This book has achieved just the right balance between throughness and overview so that I have been able to refer to it in a casual manner (once every 3-6 months) and been able to use the results without taking a new college course. I am a practicing Analog electronics engineer and thermal engineering is something I only do once (perhaps more ?) during a design/project.

Great material, LOTS of errors and typos

This book has some great material that can't be found anywhere else, such as clear examples for calculating silicon dies thermal stresses and other electronic packaging niche topics. It's well written, but sometimes fails to provide justifications for some of the important assertions that the readers are forced to accept. The quantity of glaring typographical errors and errors in formulas made this otherwise great text just mediocre.

Reads like a textbook

This book is full of great information and is well organized; however, it has the read quality of a textbook. If this is what you are looking for, than this is the book for you. It really works best as a reference guide.
