We first heard about the concept of Big History in a TED talk by the author of this book, David Christian. The TED talk puts in perspective just how much has happened in the universe and on planet Earth long before humans came into the picture. Christian argues that all of this vast history is important to our understanding of who we are.
In the introduction of the coffee table book "Big History," Bill Gates writes "Big History provides a framework for understanding literally all of history, ever, from the Big Bang to the present day." That quote sums up the book pretty well!
This book does not go in depth into any one subject. Instead, it provides an overview of everything: the big bang, the expanding universe, formation of the elements and planets, Earth's formation, continental drift, the evolution of many different lifeforms, dinosaurs, and finally humans and civilization (of course I skipped over lots in that summary!) It's a great resource to discover interesting topics to deep dive into.
Each spread covers one aspect of history, complete with illustrations, diagrams, quotes from famous people and experts, maps, and more. A timeline runs across the top of every page, indicating that section's place in our history. The very end of the book contains a textual timeline of human history, with maps of the world at different points in time. It's an intriguing look at how human civilization has developed.
Overall, this book is a fascinating thing to have on hand. We like to open it to a random page -- we always learn something interesting.
