About the Author
Lois Fichner-Rathus is professor of art in the Department of Art and Art History of The College of New Jersey. She holds a combined undergraduate degree in fine arts and art history, an M.A. from the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art, and a Ph.D. in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Art from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her areas of specialization include contemporary art, feminist art history and criticism, and modern art and architecture, as well as the theory and foundations of art and design. She is also the author of Foundations of Art and Design, 2nd Edition, and co-author of Culture & Values: A Survey of the Humanities, 8th Edition. She resides in New York.

Wonderful.

Although I am a full time college student and my major is currently Biology, I am enrolled in this course at my university and I love it! Really, this book is just that great and very informative. I had no interest in art whatsoever but by taking this class and using this book specifically, my long lost passion for art has magically reappeared. I find myself reading it because I want to, and not because I have to. I have a wonderful instructor. She is a sweet woman and she is very passionate about the material she is teaching us. She shares her thoughts and opinions about a certain piece, but respects our opinions, as well. She is great and we use this book two days out of the week... since I have her class on TR. :) I bought my book used at the bookstore so I did not get an online access code. However, I just purchased one on amazon this evening and cannot wait to get it so I can experience it online. I hope those who are using this book in their art course enjoy it as much as I have! :)

Great start with Understanding Art

Understanding Art is a clearly-written and well-illustrated introduction to the various fields of art (sculpture, painting, photography, etc.), as well as a brief introduction to art history. It even includes sections on current new art forms such as digital art and spray painting as art. The numerous examples help to clarify categories and definitions. The index of art terms at the back of the text is invaluable.

Art Book Review

I ordered "Understanding Art" for a class. The book arrived in excellent condition. It is a second as there are a few misprints or pages reversed. Nothing serious that cannot be easily figured out, just not expected. The book was well worth the money and I would recommend this Amazon purchase to anyone looking to purchase an excellent art book reasonably.
