This is an absolutely must have for any students or followers of the Yoruba religion and culture. William Bascom has done an excellent job of bringing out Ifa verses and patakis in this book.
The information he has learned from so many years of his Anthropological studies in Nigeria have proven to be an inmense source of knowledge and wisdom on the subject. Comparing this book to others written on the subject matter, there is no comparision !
All of Bascom's work is phenominal .

For eighteenth-century revolutionaries, equality meant understanding human beings as fundamentally alike and then creating universal political and economic rights. Rosanvallon sees the roots of today's crisis in the period 1830-1900, when industrialized capitalism threatened to quash these aspirations. By the early twentieth century, progressive forces had begun to rectify some imbalances of the Gilded Age, and the modern welfare state gradually emerged from Depression-era reforms. But new economic shocks in the 1970s began a slide toward inequality that has only gained momentum in the decades since.

There is no returning to the days of the redistributive welfare state, Rosanvallon says. Rather than resort to outdated notions of social solidarity, we must instead revitalize the idea of equality according to principles of singularity, reciprocity, and communality that more accurately reflect today's realities.

A Great Companion Read to the Piketty Book

The Ronsanvallon book is illuminating of its subject and is an apt companion to the Piketty book, "Capital in the 21st Century". "The Society of Equals" includes an historical analysis of concepts of equality through the ages, and a philosophical framework within which we can begin to understand how society's perception of equality has changed in the past and is likely to change in the future. While both this book and Piketty's book are clear about currently increasing inequality of income and wealth, this book offers new insights in key areas that are thinly covered in Piketty's book. The Piketty book shows that increases or decreases in inequality are a consequence of: (1) ratios of capital, income, growth and savings, (2) politics, and (3) social norms, but says little about the latter two of these causes. Ronsanvallon's book, on the other hand, deals mainly with the politics and social concepts that have shaped equality (and inequality), and offers a way a looking at politics and social norms that may offer a path to a more egalitarian future. Piketty's solution to inequality is fiscal (re-distributive taxation) and he suggests his solution may not be feasible due to politics and social norms. Rosanvallon offers hints that politics and social norms can be shaped to bring about a new consensus on egalitariansim that may be, or contribute to, a solution to increasing inequality.

The book is difficult to read, either because of murky academic language or an awkward translation, or both. Phrases like "the juridicalization of individualism" take a little effort to digest, and this book is full of comparable terminology. I believe Rosanvallon's book was published before Piketty's but Rosanvallon was well aware of, and cites, other works by Piketty and Saez on related subject matter. It would be great to see a sequel to Rosanvallon's book, updating, commenting on and responding to Piketty's work, point by point.

If you are a political scientist you may like this book ....

The book is a political science treatment of efforts to create a "society of equals." I found some parts interesting but most of it was too academic for me. It may be of interest to political scientists, but there is too much detail for a layperson. I think the question of (economic) equality is a mainly a question of how much inequality can exist in a society without the society falling apart. Most people agree that not everybody deserves the same pay. People of high skill or in dangerous occupations deserve higher pay. But when does the ratio of high income over low (or average) income become excessive? There is only a brief reference to such ratios in the book and the problem is treated as one of principles rather than as one of numbers. I found the lack of such an analysis disappointing.

Here is a summary with emphasis on those parts that I found of interest.

Chapter 1 (The Invention of Equality, 63 pages) discusses the efforts to abolish inequalities that were based on the medieval class system where the top class considered themselves different in nature from the rest of the people. Privilege based on birth was to be replaced by a meritocracy. This was a driving force behind the American and French Revolutions of the eighteenth century. The book quotes approvingly writers who stated that "The progress of civilization depends on the number of merchants and artisans with a direct interest in expanding their industry. Conversely, a society in which (most) people live in a state of dependency, tied to the soil and subject to their masters, tends to reproduce itself without change" (p. 28). The main thrust was to achieve legal equality.

Chapter 2 (The Pathologies of Equality, 90 pages) discusses the effects of the industrial revolution and capitalism and the reaction to them. Meritocracy did not result in equality and various solutions were proposed. Communism was one of them and the book provides an interesting discussion of its origins and its inherently totalitarian nature. The book quotes Carbet (p.122) who wrote that there was no need for a pluralistic press because anxiety and opposition would have disappeared in a communist society. There should be only one newspaper per town and it "would be nothing more than the minutes of meetings and would contain only narratives and facts without any commentary by journalists." Another pathology was the introduction of National Protectionism and Xenophobia. The "Us versus Them" attitude reached its high in racism and segregation. The book attributes the absence of socialism in the United States to racism and to discrimination against new immigrants.

Chapter 3 (The Century of Redistribution, 44 pages) deals with the introduction of the progressive income tax in early twentieth century that resulted in what the book calls the Redistribution Revolution. In part, it was a reaction to fear of revolution by the poor. The idea had gained traction in the late nineteenth century: "Revolution can always be avoided by opportune reform" (p. 175). Redistribution policies became stronger after the end of World War II in 1945.

Chapter 4 (The Great Reversal, 46 pages) the reversal of redistribution policies in the late 1980's by introducing "Redistributive Justice" and the focus on distinguishing between luck and merit as factors for inequality and proposing equality of opportunity rather than equality. The book points out (p. 241) that it is hard to justify some inequalities as a result of merit. The ratio of pay between the higher and the lower paid workers is 6:1 for the 99% of the workers. But the average CEO's of major corporations in the U.S. was 150 times the average worker's salary in 1990 while it was 35 times that amount in 1974. The book attributes the recent high ratio to collusion between CEOs and boards of directors.

Chapter 5 (The Society of Equals: A Preliminary Outline, 47 pages) describes the author's proposals for a new policy of equality that is a refinement of Redistribution.

In my view fear of revolution has played a much bigger role than the author assigns to it. In 1945 there was fear of a communist takeover in several countries in Europe. Both Italy and France had strong communist parties and Greece was fighting a civil war against a communist insurrection. By the late 1980's communism has been completely discredited and in 1990 the Soviet Union ceased to exist, so the fear of revolution abated and the "great reversal" followed. What we have now is the rise of populist parties and religious fundamentalism that promise to create a just society. While such movements are at odds with each other and we are not in an immediate danger of a world revolution things are likely to change in the future. Therefore there is a pragmatic reason to introduce policies that attempt to smooth out excessive income differences.

Finally, a minor point. There are numerous references to events (for example, "July monarchy") that may be familiar to a French reader but they are not familiar to most American readers. Explanatory footnotes would have helped.

An interesting effort combining historical analysis and political theory, aimed at defending or perhaps modernizing the concept of equality. The author is a well known French historian and political theorist. I suspect this book is an effort to produce a shorter, more popular account of a larger body of work. Rosanvallon opens with a short description of the concept of equality in the French and American Revolutions. Rosanvallon argues well that equality was an important goal of both revolutions. This was rooted in the Enlightenment attack on privilege and in Rosanvallon's analysis, aimed at producing a society of "similars," characterized by individual autonomy and citizenship. In this construct, market relations were crucial to undermining established privilege and producing a society in which individuals could interact on a more or less equal footing. I was initially skeptical about some of Rosanvallon's analysis of Enlightenment equalitarianism but this book was favorably reviewed by a real expert on this topic, Gordon Wood, in the American Historical Review. This interesting section is followed by 3 chapters on the historical evolution of equality. Rosanvallon sees the Enlightenment-Revolutionary emphasis on and concepts of equality as undermined by the emergence of industrial capitalism (Rosanvallon uses the term capitalism) which led to novel forms of inequality. In turn, this leads to what he terms of pathologies of equality; ideologies that attempted to use different aspects of the concept of equality to either justify (classical liberalism) or attack (Marxism) or defend (nationalism and economic protectionism) the inequalities of industrial society. At the end of 19th century, there is at least partial success with attempts to restore important aspects of equality via progressive taxation, social insurance, and unionization. These efforts are promoted, at least in Europe, by some of the traumatic events of the 20th century, notably the 2 world wars and the Great Depression. The next chapter deals with the more recent neo-liberal erosion of equality. I found this section to be the least satisfactory in terms of analysis. Towards the end of this chapter, Rosanvallon takes on what is probably his real target, the need for a new adequate theory of equality that updates the Enlightenment-Revolutionary concept and restores equality to its central position. This analysis includes a critique of theories of equality like those developed by the American philosopher Ronald Dworkin. Rosanvallon suggests, in particular, that existing ideas about equality don't take into account the importance of individuals developing their own unique capacities. In a complement to the Enlightenment-Revolutionary concept, he suggests that the 3 pillars of equality should be "singularity, reciprocity, and commonality." What does this mean in practical terms? Rosanvallon is pretty vague, and while he states in the opening of the book that there is no going back to the older welfare state, I suspect this means the return of aggressively progressive taxation and more investment in the social safety net, important features of the welfare state.

Very important - This is pretty much the same book...

... as the original. There are times when a book needs to have masculine packaging before some men will pick it up. I believe that is the idea here. So this is a book that you would purchase to give to that guy who could really benefit but would probably not care for the original cover, etc.

Great Book To Strengthen Every Relationship In Your Life

I have been dying for a good book. Everything I have in my arsenal is self help, inspirational type books and I was trying to find something different. My friend just started reading this in hopes of helping her relationship between her and her fiancé and she said I should try it. Then a friend posted on FB about it. This seems to be the trending book.

I ordered the paperback copy because I love to read an actual book. I'm on my phone / tablet enough as it is. I started reading this Saturday night and I couldn't put it down. It is so insightful. I jumped right to the back and took the quiz to see which Love Languages mine are. I was a little surprised at the results, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Now that I know my Love Languages, I can focus more on learning about those areas, but also focus on the areas where I didn't score as high.

Knowing your love language will help to strengthen your relationships around you. Not just your relationship with your spouse, significant other, etc, but with friends and family as well.

It's great to read this book with your partner too and have them take the quiz because then you can learn each other's Love Languages and satisfy their needs in a way that they need to be met based on their personal love language and vice versa.

The information in the book is not boring. It's incredibly insightful and so helpful, especially if you are struggling in any relationship or you are just trying to love yourself better.

Great read; quick summary in my review.

I thought this was a pretty good (and quick and easy) read. I found it really eye-opening in terms of all relationships (not just romantic). It made me think a lot about my friendships and even my relationships with my children and how I show all these people in my life that they are cared and loved for. It also made me think about how other people might be showing that they care for me, but maybe it doesn't show the way I'd expect it to. I can't say that it'll be life-changing for everyone, but I think it's a good read for anyone as a means of helping them understand why sometimes, they might do something for someone, and that other person just doesn't see the value in it and vice versa. Sometimes it might be tricky to find out another person's love-language without quizzing them or digging really deep. And if you're hoping to strengthen any kind of relationship, I think it's good if both parties are on board with learning to reciprocate and understand the basis of these ideas.

I don't necessarily think you have to read the entire book to get the gist of it, either.

The 5 Love Languages (you can find this on the official website, too) are:
- Words of affirmation (compliments, praise, etc.)
- Acts of service (doing dishes/laundry/cooking/etc. for a spouse)
- Receiving gifts (Pretty self explanatory. This could be as simple as picking up your friend's favorite candy bar and randomly giving to him/her. Don't think this means you have to be dropping diamonds in your wife's lap every week.)
- Quality time (Also explanatory. Could be as simple as watching TV together quietly with your loved one.)
- Physical touch (Calm down, this could be as simple as holding hands or quick contact in passing.)

We often feel the most love when our particular love language is expressed to us and we also have tendency to use that love language on everyone else. But that's not what speaks the most to everyone. Learning other people's language can help you express your love for someone else in a much more effective and powerful way than just using what works best for you. As I said, this applies to all relationships! Learning this concept made me really think about my children and I knew right away which language spoke the most volumes to my four year-old and I try to consider this as much as possible in my daily interactions with her. Discussing with my husband which languages spoke the most to us gave us a better understanding of what has the most impact on each of our perspectives on our relationship.

Anyway, great concept overall and I found it to be very insightful as far as opening up my eyes to how others have expressed their feelings for me and how I can effectively reciprocate my feelings for them.

A book that's a keeper for the beginner and as valuable to the shooter as he/she advances

Rather late in my existence, I took up trap. A local club with three trap houses is within a short drive of the house. Although very modest in appearance, this club has outstanding results in state and national meets with their youth program. It welcomes all - kids, women, & men; its volunteer staff is wonderfully helpful to all. My first gun and I were a poor match. At the end of one Winter League, I won the toilet bowl trophy for the lowest score in eight weeks of shooting. "Keep trying" is emblazoned below the toilet bowl. I thought this was very funny, but I was determined to do better. So, I got a new-to-me used break open shotgun of a better fit and read every book I could on trap shooting for the beginner. When I came upon Breaking Clays, I found it full of useful information for the beginner. I checked it out repeatedly from the library before realizing I'd better buy the book. Which I did.. One of Batha's suggestions, for example, is to use a balance board regularly to train the brain. Moved by the power of suggestion, I bought a wobble board from Fitter First and have used it every day for seven months. This is but one of the many practical tips he
imparts. Have my scores improved? Yep. And I imagine they'll get better as I refine my technique. This book has worked for me. Even as I edge up to a more advanced level, it's a keeper. There's a lot more to learn from it.

Best shotgun instructional book

Excellent for an introduction to the shotgun sports, and also valuable for more advanced shooters. Great graphics, and enjoyable, easy to read and understand prose, really explain the technique to improve your shooting. Beautifully printed and edited, with just the right amount of info. By far the best of the dozen or so books I've read on this subject. I've given this as gifts to a handful of new shooters, and they've all loved it.

A brilliant interactive Santa book!

I thought this was a book where you would pull back the flaps to reveal more images but it's even better! Each page has a groove travelling through it taking Santa on a journey. Santa is on a little sleigh on wheels that you pull back a few times like a hot wheels car, position him at the start point within the groove and he motors his way across the page, taking your toddler or young child on his journey, across each page. The pictures and text are great as with all Usborne books. My son is a bit too young for this...he just wants to grab Santa off the book...but mommy and daddy loved it ;-). For a 3+ year old this book is awesome!!

Grandparents , Buy this precious book NOW!

This is one of the cutest books I have ever seen! A MUST FOR TODDLERS. Sit and enjoy together! I didn't find this book until after Christmas so I bought for next Christmas.
I also bought Pull-BACK BUSY CAR BOOK!
I am a retired librarian of 32 years. K-4. Unborn books are great for older kids too!

Perfect handbook for cyclist aiming at using power meter for training

Having read and constantly referred back to all Joe Friel's books, all the variations of his Training Bible aimed at Cyclist, Triathletes, etc... I immediately purchased this book as soon as it came out.
This book picks off where the 'Training Bibles' left off as it dives deep into power meter training, which is the biggest training trend for cyclist of all levels, as power meters become widely available and accessible.
I've been training with a power meter since 2008, and read Andy Coggan's book in great detail, and also use it regularly, as I a view these types of books more as reference book to keep coming back to, rather than books you read once and put it back on the shelf.

In spite of being knowledgeable about training and power meters, I found this book to be a great reading book as well as a great reference book.
The book is very easy to read and addresses very well not only the how, but also the why of power meter training. Even though, I'm a believer and already use it, I found those section very entertaining and very educational.

The tone of the book assumes no prior knowledge from the reader and I found that very useful. The material and concepts are all very current and up-to-date.

Joe Friel's ability is to make simple all the concepts behind power meter training easy to understand and very logical, without going into deep technical details as Andy Coggan's reference book on power meter training.

I view this book as targeted at an wider audience that includes not only athletes that currently only use heart rate and want know why and how to us power meters, but also experienced athletes that want to complement their knowledge.

Don't hesitate, get this book, read it and keep coming back to it !!!! and to address other comments, to get an even deeper understanding do read Andy Coggan's book (which Friel quotes throughout this book), although it is more technical and takes longer to understand.

In summary, this is the perfect book for cycling enthusiasts that are training with heart rate and are curious about power meter based training. It has something for everyone, from athletes with no knowledge of power meter training to athletes with already years of power meter training on their background.

Great addition to my library !!! Now we need this book on Kindle !!!

A good intro to training with power, a few glaring problems

It's hard to read anything on power training without comparing it to Training and Racing with a Power Meter by Hunter Allen and Andy Coggan. That book gives a very detailed and technical description of training with a power meter. The problem for those new to using a power meter is that it's detailed and technical.

Friel's new book is geared more towards those who are considering getting a power meter or just bought one and want to know how it is different from training with a heart monitor. I'd say it does that pretty well.

There are a few problems though. There's almost nothing new in the book at all. If you've read Friel's blog and the articles on TrainingPeaks, you won't find new information here.

The biggest problem is that he defined Intensity Factor wrong. IF, as seen in all the training software out there, is (Normalized Power/Functional Threshold Power). Friel instead defines IF as (Average Power/Functional Threshold Power). Those two numbers can vary quite a bit. After seeing that mistake, it had me questioning every table and calculation based on IF for the rest of the book.

He proposes several rules that don't make sense. For example, the 5% rule that says you can double any duration and maintain 5% less power. It sounds nice, but it doesn't work for most durations for all athletes. For example, a sprinter with a 600 watt 1-minute power probably can't maintain 570 watts for 2 minutes unless we're talking about world-champion level fatigue resistance. Even a longer duration like 300 watts at 5 minutes, holding 290 watts at 10 minutes would be very unlikely. The rule only really applies to longer aerobic durations, but that it not clear from the book (when something only applies to a few situations, it's not really a rule, is it?)

The Appendix has several workouts in it, but they are just a rehash of the workouts from the Training Bible books. They are not nearly as detailed as the ones in the Hunter/Coggan book.

Lastly, the book has a weird semi-conversational tone, with the author referring to himself in the first person. Some authors can pull that off and have it feel natural. To me, if felt forced.

Excellent Guide To Training With Power

Joe Friel's The Power Meter Handbook may be the single best available resource on training with power for most cyclists and triathletes. Released in late 2012, Friel does a good job of making sense of a topic that is confusing to many. Training & Racing With a Power Meter, released in 2010, is also an excellent book on the same topic, but it is more technical and might be an easier read for more advanced users of power meters.

Riding with a power meter is similar to using a heart rate meter in that the primary display is a single number (watts of power), except power data is significantly more useful if you know what you are doing. Using a power meter is so important that Joe won't coach an athlete who doesn't use one.

Before you pick up the book know that you won't master a power meter overnight or in a week. You must familiarize yourself with the concepts, analyze workouts within power meter software, and compare workouts over time. No single concept of power meter use is difficult, but experience is necessary. If you like looking at numbers and comparing workouts, this will be fun. If this has no appeal to you then hire a good coach to do the work for you.

To get full benefit from your power meter you must test often (every 4-6 weeks) and download ALL of your workouts into your training software.

Newer athletes, and those not looking for serious performance, can get most of the book's benefit by reading to page 125 (book length is 209 pages). More advanced athletes and coaches will want to read beyond, and for those familiar with power but looking for deeper information, this is where the book shines. Joe explains advanced metrics such as chronic training load (CTL) and acute training load (ATL), and how to manage workouts to peak at the right time without guesswork.

The third part of the book provides specific guidance on base, build, and peak period workouts for three groups: triathletes, road racers/time trialists, and century riders.

Serious athletes and coaches will use this book as a reference for many years.
